This year, the IWW will have for theme, the regression of equality (more info here).

As it is said on the official website, International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

The first International Women's Days were observed in the early 1900's. At the time, the newly industrialized world saw a booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women's network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women's Day. Many organizations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause, and some of these are adopted more widely with relevance than others.

International Women's Day is all about celebration, reflection, advocacy, and action - whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women's Day has been occurring for over a century - and is growing annually from strength to strength.

We celebrate Women's Day on a different date, here. Conveniently, on the day after my birthday! That means I always have the day after my birthday off, as it's a public holiday here. (It's on the 9th of August. Women's day, that is.)

I didn't know this was a recognized holiday in S. Africa. Besides getting off work, is there any celebrations going on?
