Dragonmount: A Wheel of Time Community

Dragonmount downtime

On November 27, Dragonmount was hit by an overwhelming cyber attack. The result was similar to a "Distributed Denial of Service" (DDOS) attack, and resulted in our servers being overwhelmed with tens of thousands of page requests within a very condensed amount of time. Our web servers are powerful and well maintained. It's a testament to their resilience that they didn't immediately meltdown. Despite seeming to be offline, they never crashed, and immediately recovered as soon as we blocked incoming traffic. In the end though, even good web servers like ours succumb to these type of attacks. Because the overall assault originated from thousands of infected PC's across the world (mostly, if not entirely all Windows machines), it was impossible for us to simply deny a specific machine or IP address.

I want to make it clear that no data from our servers was compromised or lost. Your passwords are safe and encrypted on a database server unaffected by the attack. Dragonmount does not directly process or store any credit card information, so nothing related to our online store was anywhere near at risk.

People have asked our staff why we were targeted. There is probably no easy answer to that. Most likely, we were not singled out for any reason other than the fact that we are a medium-sized, established website with a large user base. The specific distributed attack that affected us is known to seek out sites just like ours. This specific one is too weak to tackle huge sites like Google or Facebook, so it seeks out sites like ours that seem like easy prey.

They will not find us so easy next time.

To combat this issue, we've significantly increased the security settings on the DM web servers, and also invested in an industry-leading security service. I won't go so far as to say this will never happen again, but I can assure you that we've literally done everything we can, with the resources we have, to make the site as secure and stable as possible.

Thank you for your patience and support. As a whole, the you continue to amaze me with your kindness. On behalf of the entire DM staff, I want to thank everyone who emailed us with ideas, suggestions, offers of help, or just friendly encouragement. Special thanks to Brent Wentworth for his outstanding assistance during the most stressful part of the downtime.

If you have any questions, feel free to email us, or just comment below.

And now... back to preparing for A Memory of Light!

Good to hear Jason im glad its back up and running. I knew with the powers of callandor you would be victorious overall. Now time to do some posting.

Go Light! Glad to hear everything is fixed.

The site still seems to be very slow, however. Is the attack really over or have you just found a way to mitigate it?

I think Herid its just running slow since we are all trying to get on to see what we all missied over the last few days

Tai'shar Staff of Dragonmount!

Hey, Jason, are you guys using a web analytics program (although, I guess I could just scan you for tags....lol). Not really related to the article above, but just professionally curious.

moridin is the mastermind behind the cyber attack.

caemlyn has fallen,

a huge shadowspawn army is going to crush lan at tarwin's gap,

the borderlands in the north are overrun by dark forces,

its total war now,and the next step was to blind the communication centre,

dragonmount!!!!!

come on rand, where are you?a little bit of awesomeness will be greatly

appreciated.

darkness has sounded its battlecry, now its time for the light to counter attack.

Glad to see Dragonmount up and running again.

Man... did I miss you guys!!! *grouphug*

(In hindsight, it's fitting to see a smoking Dragonmount (server), caused by an attack of a faceless evil that sends countless Trollocs in to destroy...with AMoL and Tarmon Gai'don on the horizon)

Welcome back, I've missed you!

(Loved the announcement page that was on during the attack, BTW!)

May the Dark One take them to Shayol Ghul!

Tai'shar Dragonmount!

Thanks Jason, Brent and DM staff in general!

Well met! I am comforted to know that this very cool website is secure..... now, onwards to AMoL and to quote he who comes with a bong (lol! every time I see it!) 'onwards to posting!!!!!!

I loved the announcement page too :)

Well, I suppose such things can happen when there's a Forsaken among the stuff members...

Thank you, Jason.  I love this site and appreciate all of the work that goes into it.

First, I hope things are returning to normal.  The fact that I've been able to explore the site for the last 10 minutes or so is a good sign.

Next, just to add to your information about what has been going on:

I'd been trying to access the site since Sunday, December 2nd to buy the next e-book for my WoT reread.  Each attempt was stalled at either the page where it was checking my browser or the one saying the site was offline.  Generally, no amount of clicking the view live site button would take me to the site.  Occasionally, I would get through to the site, only to have go down again when I click to go to another page.

This was the way of it from Sunday through Tuesday, December 2nd to the 4th.  Today, Wednesday, December 5th I'm finally able to use the site without problem.

I was using Safari on my Mac, though a few times I tried Chrome on Windows.

(Sadly, in my push to re-read the series, I had to make a purchase from Apple rather than Dragonmount.  Next book I plan to buy a bit in advance to avoid any problems.)
