Wheel of Time Television Show

Mashiara Sedai

Harriet McDougal teased us all at the tail end of JordanCon with an announcement about an upcoming announcement.

We know now, thanks to Team Jordan's Google+ Page, that the rights for a The Wheel of Time feature/television show have been resolved and they are currently in the works with a major studio. Here is the quote from Harriet:

Update: Wanted to share with you exciting news about The Wheel of Time. Legal issues have been resolved. The Wheel of Time will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn’t be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio —Harriet

That's all the information we have at the moment. We will update as soon as we learn more. Until then, let's all bask in the joy of knowing that our beloved series will still continue. It's not the beginning, but it's a beginning.

I suspected it had something to do with the rights being sorted out, this is even better!

How were they sorted and where does REE stand in this production and are we talking animated or live action and is there a time frame?

We don't know those details yet, Cindy. I believe Harriet will release more soon. Or the production team will. We should have it soon.

I will be a very happy person if this is a good adaption. Please be true. I wonder how they'll deal with the length though. Anyway, I'm still very excited!

I think, depending on the carrier, they could do 2 books per season.  If it is something like HBO, SHO, A&E, TNT, etc, then that wouldn't be the case, because they only do about 10 to 12 episodes per season.  But networks tend to have about 20 (or so) episodes per season.  For the latter, I think that they could better break it down as into two books per season.  That would give us a good 7 seasons or so and not have to worry too much about actors aging out of their roles (assuming live action).

The length?  Multiple seasons.

I'll bet it's not an animated TV show but something more like Game of Thrones.

Harriet said it's a major studio so I think that would leave RE out.

Serious77, funny thing is, the "premium" channels episodes are a full 60 minutes due to containing no commercial slots, whereas the "network" episodes usually are around 40-42 minutes because of all the commercial breaks.  The resulting difference per season is only a couple of hours of actual time.

I honestly hope it gets the "Netflix-Hulu-Amazon" treatment.  I'm a huge fan of GoT, but WoT doesn't fit with the typical HBO-Showtime nudity/sex/language format.  And the only thing I've seen on Cable/Public television that could do WoT well and accurate,  I feel, is on AMC or SyFy.  I think putting on SyFy would be a death sentence.

This is the best news we've had in a long time! I'm so happy I also want to bunny hope like Hallia hehehehe!
I'm sure there are experts around: how long would it take from now before we'd see a first episode?

Elgee, if GoT or Daredevil is a good gauge, I'd say that once some of the pieces have been identified, such as writer and director, we could get it within 3 years...maybe earlier if casting goes quickly.

There is such a dedicated following of fans for this series that are so knowledgable about it that, if they are to truly "do this correctly" they should allow at least some amount of input in the creative process by those most knowledgable fans such as the ones that help upkeep this site......

From TOR:

"Harriet

McDougal’s update is all the information we have at the moment. As she mentions, the announcement will be coming from the acquiring studio, who are certainly eager to cross all the t’s, dot all the i’s, and get to heralding the big news. Further, it should be noted that this announcement does not mean that a TV series is ready to be put into production, merely that a new studio has acquired the rights to do so."

There is a need for a fantasy title that can take over from GoT on TV, with a huge thirst for fantasy from the audience that not only watches it, but is demanding more. Only WoT can fill that vacuum. The fact that a studio has picked it up is great news. Especially that GoT is finishing in the next few years, this is the perfect time too strike. When GoT finally finishes, this should be about ready to go. But only if the studio wishes to proceed, of course.

Would be interesting if it was on Netflix.  Then we could binge what the heck out of it.
