Fan Art Friday: Aiel

JenniferL

Well, I'm finally back from JordanCon. If you haven't had a chance yet, check out the excellent episode the Dragonmount Video team made about it.

This week, we're looking at the Aiel. Next year's JordanCon will be "Car'a'con", so it's never too early to start getting ideas for costumes.

Jeremy_Saliba_aiel_take%2B2.jpg

This is an excellent group portrait of several Aiel by Jeremy Saliba. The Aiel form of dress is based on Arab tribesmen and I think this illustrates that. The clothes are flowing, with lots of pockets and layers that allow for cool air to be trapped inside and protect the skin from the sun. But since the Aiel are also warriors, it takes the form of loose trousers and shirts, rather than flowing robes and caftans. Jeremy is one of two officially licensed fan artists, but unfortunately this piece isn't for sale.

This Maiden pencil sketch is done byNelly Lozanova. Far Dareis Mai is the only all woman warrior society in Randland until Elayne creates her bodyguard. The Seanchan army seems to be gender neutral, and the forces of Randland proper seem to be predominantly male, with the exception of a few women mercenaries. I like the shading and the lines on this piece.

The_Wise_ones_Aiel_by_Gala_maia.jpg

This sketch of the Wise Ones by Gala Maia is a little rougher than the other pieces, but I still think it does a good job of conveying the strength and power of these women. Sorilea (in the middle) in particular looks like she could kill and eat me.

i_have_toh_by_fee_absinthe-d3b50a5.jpg

This is a very lovely digital painting by fee-absinthe called "I have toh". Aviendha lies about her feelings to Rand, and has to meet her toh. She chooses to be beaten by the Wise Ones, though she does not tell them who she lied to or what about. The colors in this are amazing and I love that the background is unfinished. It lets you really focus on the subject. Really nicely done.

Ah, the Aiel!

I've always been pleased by Rich Boye's Sevanna, which shows her in her algode blouse and heavy skirt, but still tacky and gaudy and over-jeweled (and unlaced!), as contrasted with the same style outfit (but not as tawdry) of Amys and Lian (I can't find a larger picture of that, but i know that the thumbnail on the page used to lead to a larger picture. Indeed, I always that the intricate yin/yang (saidar/saidin)style-border on Lian's skirt was lovely, and all three seem to have been the starting off point for this lovely watercolor of an Aiel Wise One at the side of a Saldaean Queen (both appear be fan-creations, though), done by Archie-the-RedCat.

Illiena's drawing of a Wise One always struck as me a realistic version of what they might wear (aside from the lack of sleeves - sunburn!)

Over towards the Maidens of the Spear, I also really like the face and coloring of his Aviendha, even if I take issue with his caidin'sor. Here's a pair of ferocious Maidens, Bain and Chiad in a lovely painting that really conveys the veil-ness of their veils, even if the artist Stuuuu forgot that Maidens have buzzcuts with narrow braided tails. But they look so badass! Here's a less badass and more adorable (can something be adorably badass?) version of the same two characters, Bain and Chiad by RoseMuse.

And of course, no survey of Aiel-themed fanart would be complete without Mark Bray's Gaul and Chiad.

aww, Jennifer :) I've been a WOTArt collector for so very long ;). Hell, I still miss Helena Zeegers and Lotta Tjernstrom and they've stopped making WOT Art ages and ages ago.

I agree! If I could find enough Helena Zeegers art still online, I'd do a FAF just on her. Her stuff was gorgeous, and I never felt like she got enough attention.

A good deal of Helena's stuff is still around on this site (her original site was on geocities [xoom?] and went the way of the betamax, sadly). She has an elfwood page, but's light on her wonder WOT creations.

I know that there was awesome picture of fan-created Seanchan nobles drawn by Rich Boye that Helena painted in her watercolors that was mindblowing, but I can find no trace... damn. The Internet can be so ephemeral.
