A Memory of Light Cover Art

Jason Denzel

Tor Books has revealed the official cover art for A Memory of Light, the fourteenth and final Wheel of Time novel.

Click the image shown here for a larger version, or click here for the full resolution version where you can see Rand in all his 300 dpi glory.

The artwork is by renowned artist Michael Whelan. Mr. Whelan was commissioned to do this cover after Darrell K. Sweet passed away. He will be the Guest of Honor at next year's JordanCon V convention.

So, what do you think of the cover? Rand looks pretty awesome, huh? Tell us what you think in the comments below!

A Memory of Light will be released in hardcover and audiobook on January 8, 2013. The eBook will be released a few weeks after that.

Seeing this makes me so happy, but so sad at the same time. Knew it would end sometime. Seeing the art just drives it all home, I guess.

This is awesome. I love it!

Still: so many swords, so few hands...

My first and still current impression is that it pales in comparision to the DKS rough draft.....now I really HAD hoped that they could have had someone close to the man just finish the funeral pyre scene.....:-(

The full jacket cover is a little bit more pleasing, but still.......it's not contest.

*sigh*

Whelan can draw people much better than Sweet. The full cover especially looks great. Any ideas about where Rand is?

Beautiful cover! Good to see Rand has his game face on :)

I can't agree with you more Ryath. I'm so excited for the conclusion of the story, but I think I need to start planning my next book series to fill the void after its all over.

I'm guessing he's in the cave at Shayol Ghul

Great cover, but it does contain spoilers about Callandor and who are going to aid Rand at the Pit of Doom.

Oh.. and is that an eclipse in progress in the background? "Twice dawns the day" and such?

Its definetly Moiraine and Nyn in the background, the sketches of the Nynaeve character on Tor.com clearly show her wearing the ki'sain, and anyone in blue has to be Moiraine.

No, it was his left hand.

Wow, a couple of things:

1) It's beautiful. M.W. is the absolute MAN!

2) Kinda a bummer that Calindor here doesn't match with the way it looks on the cover of the The Dragon Reborn.

3) On the back - Nyneve and... Moiraine or Egwene? Probably Moiraine since Egwene wouldn't wear just blue anymore

4) Is that an eclipse? "Twice dawns the day..."

I'm sort of torn. I love M.W.'s cover here, and I generally really disliked Sweet's covers... except his for AMoL.

The woman in blue IS Moiraine. Sketches found on tor.com show the jewel. No ki'sain is seen in the sketches, but if the woman in yellow isn't Nynaeve, I'm stumped as to whom. Is her hair so light in color?

It's an odd pose for Rand, but otherwise a great cover.

Hmm. If this is supposed to show the two women that join in a circle with Rand, it kind of gives the lie to all the theories that Alivia would be one of them, and that that would be the way she would help him die...Isn't she described as a tall woman? Moiraine (clearly the one in blue) is very short, as pointed out numerous times...Nynaeve is also not known to be tall, though not as short as Miraine; in this art, the two women like to be of similar heights. I can't imagine it being anyone but those two, really. And clearly, this is Shayol Ghul, the tunnel to the pit of doom.

Overall, great work. I was worried that the painting would take some wildly different direction, but this one is very much in keeping with the rest of the series. I would still like to see the Darrell Sweet painting included as is, inside the cover or something...but we'll see. It's true that Michael Whelan paints better faces and figures, but he stayed true to the tradition Darrell established. Awesome!
