It's underwaaaaaaaay! And we all know what that means - yours truly has been getting next to no sleep since at least a week. In Germany, where I'm at, the live streams start at 10pm ish and the last games usually start at 5am each night.... I have to work early in the morning but WHO CARES IT'S FOOTBALL

Fine, soccer or whatever. And yes it's women's soccer. I play, myself, and am a big fan. If you haven't noticed. Just wondering if there's any other enthusiasts/supporters around here? Show me what you know!

MY TEAMS

- GERWNT (Germany) because well duuhhhh. My country's team is amazing, footbol is our national sport, practically ever 4th girl here plays it in a club aaaand yep well we're not ranked No 1 for nothing. Some of my idols here are Nadine 'Natze' Angerer (#1, Goalkeeper), Dzsenifer Marozsan (#10, Midfielder) and the others are also really great people and players. I met some of them recently when they played a friendly against Brazil in the next-door-town, actually  :D INCLUDING NATZE:

- NZWNT (New Zealand) also known as the Football Ferns. And since I grew up there I will dang well support them, the team is awesomely fun and show a lot of ambition and spirit, and I am a huge huge fan of Hannah Wilkinson (#17, forward)
I reeeeeaaaally want them to do well, especially after last night's match against Canada - they absolutely pressured the hosts and really had a load of dangerous chances - which didn't make it though obviously. Damn that crossbar. Soooo many almost-goals *cries*
Erin Nayler, our Keeper did a helluva job too - amazing saves. She's quickly becoming one of my faves.

and last but def not least

- USWNT aka the freakin' U S of A! I've been following them for the past couple years, also been watching games from the NWSL (National Womens Soccer League in the US) when I can. It's getting pretty big over there! So many of the players, especially those on the national team roster, are really active on social media, twitter instagram you name it, and THEY. ARE. HILARIOUS. doing so. Not just that though, they are all really inspiring people and players - as I'm sure so many other women at the world cup are, however the Uswnt filmed each player's story in prep for the WWC and all in all they are all very outspoken about what they do and why they do it - showing how badass women are and inspiring a whole nation (or world, since they're quite popular in many other countries too) of girls and women.
I love them so much.... can't really pick faves, but some of my idols here are Megan Rapinoe (#15, Midfielder/Forward), Ali Krieger (#11, Right Back), Ashlyn Harris (#24 - #18 for the wwc - Goalkeeper). Amaaaaazing people with heartwrenching and truly inspiring stories. I also adore KO, Christen Press, HAO, Klingenberg, have hella respect for Hope Solo's goalkeeping skillllllsssss etc etc.  I LOVE THIS TEAM SO MUCH
If anyone's interested, you should check out the U.S. Soccer youtube channel and have a look at some of the 23 Stories or in general any of the videos of the team they put up regularly.

Anyway, I could go on and on about them but am actually watching Australia vs Nigeria on livestream in another tab - gotta go. For now. I hope some of yas will pop by and at least pretend to be this excited about the tournament as I am XD

So last night was total heartbreak... Ferns were leading 1-0 by a great goal from Stott, then ref thought she saw a handball by Hassett in China's 18 yard (it wasnt even near her arm, she deflected it off her chest) so they caught up 1-1 thanks to that totally uncalled for PK. Then China got lucky bc Erin Nayler  made a mistake came out of the box too soon and they scored. Then Wilkinson scored and tied it. Ferns were dominating the game for the most part, playing some great football but China kept stalling and fouling especially in the end phase. Even their coach got sent off for delaying a throw in by one of the NZ defenders. GRAAAAH I'm still sooooo gutted. Not gonna get over this one... We so deserved to advance :'(

But anyway....USA vs NGA tonight! I am soooo hyped for it....Got my Wildfang shirt ft some of the players names yesterday, perfect timing. Look at me fangirl. This is how pumped I been since this afternoon:

Australia v Brasil in the round of 16.

I'm disappointed, I missed most of the group stage because it didn't get much advertisement, I only heard about the results AFTER the games were played.

Hopefully can catch a few games, they are actually playing them on SBS, one of our TV channels (free to air) which is a big plus for women's football.

They used to play the W A-League (australian women's equivalent to A-League) matches on a Sunday but due to government cuts, that's been on the chopping board.

It's a shame, because I enjoy watching it. It has it's own merits that are different from the men's game.

Yep but none of them have two yellows so they're just warned - they need to be careful in the semi to not get one if they wanna potentially play in the Final. Only Saskia Bartusiak was on the bench for this one.

Speaking of which, the USWNT just won 1-0 over China which makes me happy but also MAKES MY WORST DREAMS COME TRUE argh a Germany-USA semi I am gonna die of loyalty complexes >.< whyyyyyyyyyyy

I was actually hoping the US wouldn't make it so far, really not a fan of the team with Solo on it

She just has an epic badass bitchface :P Anyway, I'm not a fan of it being an issue about whether or not she belongs on the team. As much as I'd love Ashlyn to play in the #1 spot. Hope is an AMAZING goalkeeper and one of the key players in ensuring USA got this far. It really annoys me that the commentators focus on even that aspect of her private life during games.
Also whatever the truth is - because both parties seem to change their story every time there's a new report on it - I've watched pretty much every interview on the field and with her team and she seems really happy and a decent person. Soccer is a sport where you can't have tension within a team especially for such a huge tournament event - and her teammates, who are some of the best rolemodels and people I know, have accepted her in and aren't treating her any different. So I'm good with her playing on the team. What her relationship with some members of her family is is their business. Plus it just seems that lately her accusers are just trying to bring her down - that last newsstory with her sister "spilling the truth", just before their Group D opener? Really? Plenty of time before that but no, pick the night when a player is supposed to be focused and collected for the big game. Ugh, I could go on and on but I wont :p

well my full response will be this, pro athletes need to be treated the same regardless of sex and importance to the team.
