Charles Wallace looked up at the tall, dark being who had introduced himself as a Teacher, with Meg, Calvin and his dragons (a cherubim, he reminded himself) as his classmates.  Classmates who have been assigned, the teacher had said, to help him, not the other way around.

 

"I'm afraid I won't be able to help much of anyone right now," Charles Wallace said. "It's not just that I'm not getting along in school right now --"

 

Blajeny interrupted, "Yes, we are aware of the other problem.  Nonetheless, you are called, and everyone who is called is needed.  You have talents we cannot afford to lose.  We must find out what is making you ill, and if possible, make you well again."

 

 

Meg thought back to her conversation with her mother, about the possibility that something was wrong with Charles Wallace's mitochondria or farandolae.  "Oh, please, please Blajeny, can you help?"

 

"I think," the teacher replied, "that it is you who must help."

Meanwhile, in Yadah, one of the mitochondria within Charles Wallace's cells, there was a disturbance.

 

The soothing, pulsing rhythm of Yadah was interrupted by a shriek of ugly laughter. 

 

"Kill the fara!  You need not Deepen and lose your ability to dance!  Join with me!"  

 

A group of farandolae was whirling around one of the mature, rooted farae, faster and faster, until the strength drained out of it, and its fronds wilted, its color drained, its trunk weakened.

 

With its last breath, the fara Senex reached out with its mind to its offspring Sporos.  "Do not listen to the Echthroi, Sporos.  They attempt to end us all.  You must Deepen... you must..."

 

Instead of allowing the Echthroi to un-name him, Senex made a choice.

 

Pralaya, Senex - Vanilla Town - has X'd himself.
