Suggestion: hybrid hammer as the default

I've only ever seen forced majority games on DM, and it tends to be to the detriment of the overall goal of garnering information. It's my opinion that DM mafia doesn't have the activity levels required to enforce such a rule, and introducing penalties like "achieve majority or a random player is modkilled without a coroner report" is adding insult to injury.

Make hybrid hammer the default voting option; majority can be achieved, but isn't required. The highest vote earner at end of day is lynched, in the event of a tie, a randomizer is used. It allows for majority, and it's just smart. Someone may say "what if the scum team piles on at end of day?" Well then they've outed themselves, haven't they? And that's why you vote them the next day.

Which brings me to another point: lynches should never end in a no lynch unless specifically voted for. It's a waste of information and a waste of time. Nothing is more deflating to me than spending 5 real life days on a phase only to have it end in a no lynch -- or, even worse, a modkill -- because a majority wasn't reached or there was a tie.

If you disagree let's talk about it.

I would hope this is legitimately and deeply considered by a lot of moderators in the future as I think most players who play enough hybrid hammer games come to realize they are simpler a more enjoyable, fair and ultimately balanced mechanic than a forced majority system. I came from a site that played majority games only and there was a culture clash when I first started playing hybrid hammer games at other sites - there was resistance - but as many others that have changed systems I found them to be vastly superior.

Tom's rationale is very strong, especially in a site where games generally have activity problems (especially over the weekends) - hybrid hammer simply makes voting more important and increases the overall incentive.

There have been games run here where the system was received warmly - The Red Wedding comes to mind - but most games still default to a forced majority game, some with a cruel and unusual kicker of "random no-coroner modkill" punishments for a failed majority.

It's the only way I do them now.  Penalties for failing to hammer were too varied and inconsistent anyhow.

I've never run a hybrid hammer game, but I'm not opposed to it.  It should be up to the individual mods though imo.

Sure, but sometimes people have bad ideas.

Also moar hybrid hammer.

I thought this was the "statements nobody cares about" thread.

Tommy, if you like the hybrid method so much, why not just mod hybrid hammer games here? The way you are going about it with this thread is just coming off as you coming in from another board and telling people who have been on DM way longer than you how to run their games. If you run your own games, that lets people see for themselves through experiencing it, and they can make their own decision after being more informed.

I think you're projecting.  You sound pretty defensive for a guy who isn't projecting.

Well I'm second on the list for basic games here. I was debating on whether to use a hybrid hammer or straightforward majority lynch. But like you have said-it's really annoying when you've worked towards a lynch for so many days. I might go for a hybrid hammer after all.

Anyway Tommy, you should take BBasel's suggestion and create a game by yourself.

I host games monthly, I just don't do so here because the queues are long and the games last too long.

You should do it here.

As for games lasting 5-7 days. They would be very short, fast paced games. I don't think people are very active that much for that kind.

I think a well planned game should last 5-7 real life days.

It's really all about giving appropriate deadlines here. After modding my game...I think giving 24 hours for night and 48 for day worked well. Not to mention that most of the times people reached majority before the deadline so the days/nights were even shorter.
