Chat Thread - Official BotRH Beer Club

Recommended Posts

This is the chat thread for the Band of the Red Hand Beer Club.  Myself and Chae are your official moderators.  Please fully read and understand all rules before posting here.

1) Post here or PM myself or Chae to be included in the Beer Club 2014.  We will provide you a chart and update it with stamps for you as you try new beers.  Beers that you tried in the past do not count for purposes of this club.  Your chart will be over in the official thread.  The official Beer Club thread with cards is here: http://www.dragonmount.com/forums/topic/89762-official-botrh-beer-club/

2) The chart is not entirely complete, so feel free to make suggestions for great beers to add.  If you’d like to make a suggestion, again, please post in the thread or PM Chae or myself.  If you suggest Bud Light you are out of the club.  Forever.  And will be relegated to digging latrines for weeks on end on the Infantry boards.

3) As you discuss in this thread, please keep it civil and kid friendly.  We do not want/allow minors as part of the club, but this is a DM board so keep it clean folks.

5) While these are the 100 beers to try in 2014 we don’t actually expect anybody to try them all.  Some of them are local brews and would be hard to get, etc.  We just want to have a nice community around the drinking of good beer.  So please do not consider the club to mean we are encouraging excessive drinking.

6) If drinking is not legal or advisable for you in any way shape or form, please do not join this club.  This is meant to be an enjoyable social experience, not a chance to break the laws of your country in any way.

7) Any additional rule that we feel necessary to put in place at any time.

I'm enjoying a Hobgoblin Dark English Ale right now. (Wychwood Brewery).  Very, very tasty!

One of DJ's boss' got a sampling of imported beers from one of their clients.  They are a distributor here in the states.  He brought me home 3 beers.  One even has a cork!  LOL  I'll let you know how the other two are when I get to them one of these days.

Yummy corked beers

Some of my favorites beers were tasted in Asia.

Tiger Beer is terrible but it's awesome to drink just because it's different and a foreign country's Bud Light.

Chang I enjoyed a lot - that was kind of my go to in places where I wasn't sure what the other drinks were.

South Korea has a pretty good light beer called Hite that is sort of fun to say when ordering

Cusquena is on the list and it is very popular in Peru.  I can't call it like a "bud light" of Peru though, mostly because it is good.

Do I win if I've had all of the beers?

Yes, but only if you've had them since signing up :-)  And by win, I mean win because of how much good stuff you've tasted.

Question: Are your beer selections from around the world? Or mostly USA based? I'm in Sweden so most USA microbrews won't make it here.

Suggestion: Anything made by Mikkeller or Brewdog

Well, I have a pretty healthy obsession with Belgian beers, and Chae is in Europe so (I think) we have a fair representation.  Of course, we are open to suggestions for beer to add to the list.  I think we'll be adding Spotted Cow from New Glarus brewing, and I'm sure we can add some from Mikkeller or Brewdog.  I can get you your card this weekend or Chae can if she beats me to it.

Chae can try to beat you ... *sips on her Grimbergen*

but now she'll enjoy her drink

@ Barm : so far, the beer I have added for Europe are Belgian (except the guinness lol), so do not hesitate to send us suggestions from Sweden

*stumbles in to the Beer Club fresh from the Archers campfire with smores and flaming shots in hand. Looking to check out the club before seeking membership I spot faces familiar and new across the way. Hitching a smile onto my dial I decide to head over and say hi. On the way I almost drop my smore and perform a bit of a juggling act to hold on to it and end up flat on my face. From the floor I watch as my three flaming shots run across the floor in three different direction; one quickly heads toward a table leg and my eyes grow wide as flames lick up its length to engulf the tabl. The second hits the wall, tongues of fire are burning up beer charts faster than I can blink. With a feeling of dread I watch as the third and most potant shot makes its way unerringly toward the group...*

Oops...

Mikkeller is one of the best out there atm.

I'd add Stillwater and Evil Twin - two other great gypsy brewers.

RR Task

Nikons RA senses tell him rules have been broken and he runs to see what has happened, entering the room he sees three flaming shots spill and engulf various things in fire. After putting the fires out he approaches the offender and pulls out his RA rulebook.

RR Harry,

The band rules, found here, strictly forbid the breaking of five sacred laws.  In spilling flaming shots you have broken the number one rule "No spilling brew, to include (but not exclusive to) Battle Brew, Bandy, Flaming Shots, Guinfantry, Infantry Brew, Cavalry Brew, Archer Brew, Brew Tea, and MG Special Brew. Causing another person to spill brew counts as spilling brew yourself." For breaking this (or any) law, even for RR tasks, you will be assigned a spot fine to complete as punishment for your crimes.

SPOTFINE

The normal punishment for your first RR task is to have the accused write a verse or two of Jak O' The Shadows so I assign you two verses.  If you need help figuring out how to write them please see the first post in the JotS thread.

thanks so much for the list Brid !

That hobgoblin beer sounds awesome

i wonder if we can get it here in Belgium

You should be able to, it is a British brewery, we can pick it up here in Sweden and I've had it in Canada too. The brewery makes a bunch of other ones, I had a really good one from them called Goblin King recently.

Yesssss. I've never heard of Stillwater but Evil Twin is also good. Did you know that Evil Twin is actually Mikkeller's brother? Apparently the two can't stand each other and never talk though I'm not sure if that is just them being clever with their marketing. Mikkeller is more Europe based though he's moving into the USA more and more, Evil Twin is the opposite.

So this is the selection in my fridge for Midsummer this weekend:

2014-06-19133829_zps3107ac33.jpg

They are (from left to right):

St. Eriks Amber Ale

Camden Pale Ale

Brewdog 5 A.M. Saint (my favourite beer right now)

Pistonhead Flat Tire

Oppigårds Thurbo Stout

Dark Beast Cascadian Dark Ale

Umeå Summer Ale

I've only had the Umeå summer ale and 5am Saint before, both of which I quite like. The rest are going to be a fun experiment tomorrow. I highly recommend 5am saint for the beer list, and I'd recommend the Umeå one too but it is a local microbrewery that is pretty small so I doubt anyone will be able to get it outside of Sweden.
