"That is not dead which can eternal lie,

and in strange aeons, even death may die"

-Excerpt from the Necronomicon

The night was quiet in the city of Arkham. The calls and trills of the whipoorwills had subsided for the nonce, and the citizens of Arkham could sleep peacefully in their beds. Changeless, legend-haunted Arkham, where clustered gambrel roofs sway in the thin air over attics and cellars where witches hid from the kings men in the dark, olden days of the province. The people of Arkham may well have told themselves and each other that such days were behind them, and maybe they thought that they believed it. But truly, deep within the recesses of their souls, they knew that the days of sacrifice and chanting under pale moons were not truly gone.

On the dawn of April 23, 1926, Arkham was awoken by a single, piercing scream, a scream which seemed to continue for eternity.

Rushing to the source of the scream at the entrance to Miskatonic University, the citizens of Arkham found a gruesome and macabre atrocity waiting for them. Ernest Johnson, the night guard at the university, was tied spread-eaged across the ornate ironwork gate, ritualistic cuts and occult symbols carved into his naked flesh. Blood covered him, and the gate, spreading into a large pool filling the entranceway. If the sight of such a horror was not enough to break a man's sanity, then the alien words scrawled in blood across the archway certainly were- Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn

The crowd gaped in shock and revulsion, many crying or yelling hysterically, throwing up or turning away in disgust, and others staring, transfixed, unable to tear their eyes away.

A man pushed his way through the crowd, and approached the woman who had first seen poor Ernest, and alerted the town with her scream. As soon as she saw him, the woman pulled him into a great embrace, sobbing uncontrollably. The man, looking increasingly uncomfortable, awkwardly patted her back. "Its ok Matilda... its ok."

Matilda sobbed more, and choked a few words between them, "B-but... Ernest... he... he...."

Eventually Matilda let go of him, and Professor Armitage turned to the distraught crowd. "Everyone, everyone please! Listen to me!"

The crowd settled down, and Armitage continued, "We all know what has happened here. Murder. Sacrifice. To call this devil-worship would be to grossly underestimate the darkness of this horror. I have known about this group for a time, but I never thought that they would move so openly and so brazenly. They are the Cult of Cthulhu."

Suddenly, Ernest gasped.

The unexpected movement and sound caused the mass of Arkhamites to stagger backwards and scream collectively in shock and fright. Ernest heaved, his eyes opening, and his mouth began moving, as if to form words, but only a whisper emerged.

Armitage approached Ernest in horrified revulsion, unable to believe that anyone could survive such torture. "How... how is this possible? Blood loss alone should have..."

Ernest's eyes fixed onto Armitage, and he rasped several more times, before finally words emerged. "They.... are planning something...."

The Professor was galvanised back into action. "Quick!" He cried, striding forward to untie Ernest, "Fetch doctor West! Hold on Ernest, tell me about their plan later, when we-"

"No!" Ernest leaned forward as far as he could, whispering into Armitage's ear, "You can't save me! You know it! I don't know the details, but... it will happen on Walpurgis Night"

Armitage's eyes narrowed, "Walpurgis Night? The 30th? That is only a week away."

"I.... know.... I was the first... I will not be the last..... more will follow..... He is coming, they said... He will return, they... AHH... said..." Ernest groaned in pain and effort, fading quickly.

"Ernest.... thank you. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. We will remember it."

Ernest slumped, and before he died he uttered three last words, sending a chill down Armitage's spine. "So... will.... He...."

........................................................

Welcome!

Here is an introduction (a parody to Fiddler on the Roof's Tradition) to the setting of this game: the old, horror-haunted, mist-shrouded city of Arkham....

The Rules!

1. Editing is allowed. I will assume you are doing so for good, honest reasons, and not removing slips, etc. If I find out you are doing so, I WILL modkill you without mercy. By editing you accept any heat that may bring you from the other players.

2. All Votes and Unvotes must be bold and red. They will not be counted otherwise. You MUST unvote before changing a vote or else it will not be counted. You may not vote for a No Lynch.

3. This is a deadline game. Deadlines are subject to change depending on activity.

4. If a majority (half+1) lynch is not reached by the deadline during Day Phase, a random player will be mod-killed.

5. NO discussing the game outside of mod PM's or assigned QT's. Breaking this rule will result in an immediate mod-kill.

6. You may reveal your role but not your character or any flavour text I have given out in your Role PM

7. No quoting the mod. Paraphrasing is allowed, but direct quotes of any outside contact with me will result in your death by modkill.

8. Dead people are allowed one "Bah!" post, which cannot contain any game-related information.

9. Play nicely. Okay, it's mafia, it's not a NICE game, but anything outside the spirit of the game will not be tolerated. I don't want to see personal attacks at all in this game.

10. All night actions occur simultaneously. Meaning the order in which I receive them doesn't matter, and no results will be given until Daybreak.

11.Players must be active. At least 1 post per RL day is expected from all players. A LOA is fine, just pm me and we can work something out. If stuff is going on and you cannot play the game, that is cool, just inform me and I will find a replacement.

12. As the mod, I reserve the right to change rules, hand out Post Restrictions, kill people, etc. Because I am Cthulhu.

The flavor intro in the OP is freaking epic. Well done, Hoof.

:baalzamon:

Few things I'm already looking into from OP: Green italicized text is a famous chant associated with this stuff, as many of you prob already knew. It seems strangely emphasized however. I'm kind of paranoid about some mechanic requiring the repeating of the phrase or even the name of the big tentacled bad boy of the depths. Don't think uttering the phrase or his name is a good idea.

Other is that in rule #12, Hoof says that he himself is ______. Wasn't expecting that. Figured the Old Ones would be scum and that ______ would be GF or some kind of PR.

Lastly, and this didn't seem like much, but eh worth pointing out I guess, a strange amount of significance seemed to be set up in the theme text about when _____ would awaken, on Walpurgis night which is a week away apparently. Doubt there's any timer mechanic in a basic game, but still.

The OP seems awesome, though don't know if I'll be able to find a book. Is it called Call of Cthulhu? I'll mostly read about it online.

I welcome all forms of speculation. It might give me good ideas for if I ever host an Advanced Call of Cthulhu game haha

Des are you theme speculating?

Never mind what I'm doing. It will all make sense eventually, long after my bones have fed the earth. Or something.

The OP seems awesome, though don't know if I'll be able to find a book. Is it called Call of Cthulhu? I'll mostly read about it online.

So I say not to use the C word and Xthrax comes out and uses it a few posts later anyways. Obvscum.
