Cosmos Remake

Fox will be making a remake of Carl Sagan's science show Cosmos. Neil deGrass Tyson will take Sagan's role with Seth MacFarlane and Ann Druyan as executive producers. While deGrasse Tyson is no Sagan, I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with this show. As science shows go, I rate the original Cosmos as one of the best.

Cosmos is set to premiere in 2013.

Fox is about the last network I could believe going for something like this.

Fox runs family guy, and a bunch of other shows.

Fox is the bipolar opposite of FoxNews believe it or not.

SD: Same video yeah

Basel: They are a company. They want to make money. It makes perfect sense.

SD: I think he meant because they usually make shows like 24 and whatnot. Action and drama series not documentaries.

That is pretty much what I meant. Fox's main network showing something this intensely brainy just doesn't play to their core audience. I would find it a better fit if they put it on FX.

Have you tried any of brian cox series, wonders of the solar system/universe?

Yeah. Seen'em more than once.

It's a good series but something about the guy bugs me.

I prefer The Universe and Through The Wormhole to Wonders of the Solar System/Universe.

Neil had an AMA on reddit today about the show, here is a question and answer I thought you guys might find interesting.

Neil! What has surprised you the most about creating the new Cosmos? The process as well as the reactions of those who hear about it?

The people who say with disdain and disgust: "It's appearing on Fox? Their viewers don't know any science!" And I simply reply, "If true, that makes Fox the best network of them all on which to air this series."

How are people liking this so far?

Personally I feel like it's lacking that sense of wonder that Sagan brought to the original.

Not sure if that's NDT's fault or the writers or what but to me it's coming off as kind of a superficial/showey doc series rather than one that's supposed to be informative or profound.

You could just be to old to find a sense of wonder about it. Or since you already know all the information being presented, it doesn't seem to be profound.

Being showy was kind of the point actually. It helps draw in the younger crowd. "ooh! Shiney!"

I...don't think either of those is the case.

I get that sense of wonder from other documentary series and even from the old cosmos still.

Also I've been a huge fan of documentaries since I was a really young kid, I have seen dozens of docs cover the same material over and over.

I think, at least for me, it's safe to say that it's not about the material covered but how it's presented.

Of course there's always a thrill with learning something new but I rarely get bored going over things I already know.

Thought it was a possibility. I never watched the original, but I did watch my fair share of discovery channel/history channel when I was younger.

If anything, NDT toned down his enthusiasm and charisma. Mostly because it ends up with him going into wild tangents that are interconnected within his stream of conscious way of talking.

21st century fox, which is a huge conglomerate that runs FoxNews, etc, actually makes much of their profit from porn in their subsidiaries.

I felt that the producers were worried that viewers wouldn't get a sense of wonder from how amazing our universe is so they had to throw in a bunch of CGI to make of for it.  For me it ruined the sense of wonder about how awesome our universe is...but I'll give it a few more episodes

I like it.  I remember watching the originals and Iliked those too.  More importantly, my 6 year old can't tear her eyes from the screen.  Mission accomplished I should think.  Anything that can replace Spongebob in my daughters eyes gets a big thumbs up from me and when she can't shut up afterwards (or during) it just makes me smile. Lot's of good questions.  She gets it.  Its made simple and visualy appealing.  Well done I think.

I like it.  I also like that it's on Fox.  Ads are annoying, but the decision to branch out from the PBS demographic is a good one.  Americans as an aggregate are becoming woefully undereducated in science.  As for the CGI, I think it's appropriate.  CGI has advanced quite a bit since the original Cosmos and this show is about making science accessible to the masses.  CGI does not take away from the sense of wonder, it adds to it.  The tree of life bit was really cool imo.  The ship is a bit corny, but I don't really mind.
