Due to a glut of stickies on this board on topics that are worthwhile of being stickied, I decided to consolidate a lot of them into one thread for easy reference. Just click on the link to go to the topic listed or simply scroll down; they're all in this thread together.

Facebook, Twitter and Dragonmount-- How it Works -by jenniferl, 8/21/10

Okay, hopefully everyone by now has seen all the Facebook and Twitter icons that litter the site now. Facebook and Twitter get a bad rep in some circles, but used wisely, they can really be very useful. Remember: These are OPTIONS. You don't have to use them to be able to enjoy DM.

The easiest one to talk about is Twitter. You can log into the site now with your Twitter credentials. This means that your log in for Twitter becomes your log in for Dragonmount and as long as you're logged into Twitter, you're logged in here. You'll also see in the "posting new topic" screen that you have a button that lets you add someone's Twitter username to a post. It'll create a link that looks like this: @dragonmount Ta dah! You'll also see at the bottom of each thread a series of icons for Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Google Buzz, Del.icio.us and email. Clicking on these links will share a link to the thread in question with the social networking or link aggregating sites. Feel free to click on whichever ones you might have an account with, if you think the thread deserves it.

Now for Facebook!

Same deal on the log ins. You can log into Facebook and be logged into Dragonmount at the same time. This is an option and not required. In addition to the little square icons for sharing links on each thread, there is also a "like this on Facebook" button. Clicking on either of these will cause a link to that thread to appear on your FB wall. Also, the "like" button will show any one that you've friended on FB that you "like" that thread when they surf DM.

As always, use caution when sharing links and liking links on FB. They tend to update their permissions rather randomly and FB always errs on the side of sharing your information, not restricting it. So if you're nervous about co workers or potential employers seeing links to DM on your wall, don't click those buttons.

Any questions?

Friends, Notifications, Watched Content, and Unread Replies FAQ Learn how to track and keep up with your favorite threads -multiple authors

Ok what IS this friends list?

I have people on mine who I've never heard of - is this MY list of friends, or is it the people who have added ME as a friend?

I just tried something. There's a friend who does not appear on my friends list. I went to members and found their name. The only option it gave me is to remove them as friend. I clicked on that, and a second or 2 later I get a notification that THIS person has added ME as a friend. The person isn't even online.

I saw this when I went to add some people to my friends list. If you look on your profile there is a way to turn it off from auto-adding people who add you to their friends list, but by default this is on.

Posted Image

If you want to change this click on "Enable" in the drop down menu I have selected there, this will disable the auto-adding for everyone who adds you as a friend.

------------------------------

Not sure how to do the layout of this FAQ, so expect it to change in the future based on your feedback. Also if you want the shortened version go to the bottom. Additionally this will be updated for when the 'New Content' and 'My content' sections are working.

I'm going to start off with how to actually subscribe or be notified of new posts or topics.

Subscriptions

You may wonder what subscribing is or why you'd want to do it. Subscriptions are just the way you track threads. If you want to know if anyone has posted something new, be alerted or e-mailed as to the status of your favorite threads this is what you need to do. Without subscriptions you can't track where you have posted or follow things that interest you. For DM 7 user you're going to need to pick an option where you subscribe to every thread you post in if you want unread replies.

Posted Image

At the top of every topic and of every board there is a "Watch Topic" button. When you click this you can be notified of any updates whether or not you have posted in that topic or on that board.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Go to My Settings in the drop down menu of your name at the top of your screen. Then you can click on the Notification Options tab to see your options. If you check the box Watch Every Topic I Reply To then you'll subscribed/be notified for everything you post in. If you no longer want to be notified for a certain board or topic click on the Forums tab next to My Settings up top.

Posted Image

Here you can managed what topics or boards you are watching. To change how you are notified or to unsubscribe there will be a check box on the far right next to each topic or board. Select that and then at the bottom of the screen you'll have the option to unsubscribe or change your notification.

---------------------------------

My Content/New Content

Posted Image

So for those of who missed the old DM system where you had two options Show unread Posts since last visit and Show new replies to your Posts never fear the option will still be available on DM 8 if not yet. Where it will be is under New Content. It is the link below where your user name is.

Posted Image

If you go to My Settings you'll come to General Settings.

Posted Image

These should be the old two DM 7 options everyone misses and loved. Additionally instead of going to My Settings you can click on My Content or go to any user's profile page to see their content by clicking the spot below...

Posted Image

Clicking this will take you to...

Posted Image

In this drop down menu you'll be able to see any topic you or the user has started or anything they have posted in. This is very similar to DM 7's Show All Posts by 'XXXX'.

Again this feature is not working so this will be updated more when this feature is available.

-------------------------------

Watched Content (Forums/Topics)

Here is what I believe to be the best way to track, watch, and follow the posts and content you want to keep track of. This is Unread Replies. So you've click on subscribe to everything you post in and have clicked Watch Thread/Board. So now what? Well now you need to go to the forum homepage which you can do by clicking Forums at the top of the screen. Along the right hand side about halfway down is the Watched Content. This can collapse and expand. Hopefully in the future it will be available while on a board or thread.

Posted Image

There is Watched Content. Clicking on the + will expand the tab open letting you see unread replies to your topics or boards that have new things on them.

Posted Image

You can toggle on and off if you want to see All threads/forums you are watching or only those with new content. However once you subscribe to everything you post in here is where you can find unread replies. Should you no longer want to track a forum or topic just read how to unsubscribe in the first post of this guide. You can also unsubscribe by pressing the Watch Content at the top of the topic or forum you are subscribed to.

----------------------------------

Notifications

This is a feature which I don't use, but many find useful. If you are away from DM this feature will send you any updates about your subscribed information to your e-mail, your cell phone, a PM to your dragonmount inbox, or an inline notification.

You have the option to choose the frequency at which you are notified. You can be told immediately, when you're not active on that board/topic, at the end of the day, or at the end of the week.

So you have to pick how you want to be notified (if at all) and how often. Lets look at our settings.

Posted Image

As you can see you have many options. To get her go to My Settings then look at the tabs on the left click Notification Options. All you have to do is pick the frequency (drop down menu) and the notification type. For those of you who wonder what an Inline Notification is, it is the number next to your name at the top of the page.

Posted Image

Clicking on the number will bring down a drop down menu for you to see. If you click View all Notifications it will take you to Your Notifications in tab below Notification Options.

Posted Image

You can change individual topic/forum notification frequencies by going to the Forums tab next to Settings. For more information see the first post of this guide. For those of you who wonder what the daily or weekly digest is like I don't recommend it for everything only a few things. It will send an e-mail for every topic, board, and status change that you are normally notified for.

Posted Image

This was once and it isn't even all of them.

-----------------------------

Quick Answer

You need to subscribe to everything you want to be notified, don't subscribe then no unread replies, no nothing. To do so either click Watch Topic/forum at the top of the page for each individual thread/forum you want to watch.

Posted Image

Or you can go to your settings and select to watch everything you post in.

Posted Image

Once you've done that go to the Forum main page where all the boards are located and where you can see the online people. On the right will be your watched content.

Posted Image

Here you can see any unread replies or boards with content you haven't read. Additionally you can be notified by e-mail, PM, Text to your phone, or inline notification if there are any updates. You can also pick how often it gets sent to you right when there is a new post or at the end of the week. Just select your settings above. Inline notifications will appear next to your user name at the top of the page and you can go to a page to see all of them. The daily and weekly digest will send an e-mail for every notification you would have recieved, same with texts.

The New Content link up top will be used for seeing all new content since your last visit or all unread replies based on the option you select in your settings.

Posted Image

My content under your user name or the link you see under someone's picture in their profile will show you all the posts by yourself or that user. If you want to change your subscriptions or alter them you can simply do it in your settings under forums. Click the boxes and at the bottom it will give you options to choose from.

----------------------------------

is there any way to make just one notification when someone replies to a topic until you read it again, like it was before the move, instead of one notification for every single reply?

A: No, not at this time. Hopefully that is something the administration can add in the future.

Where did all the posts go??? And why is everything in the wrong order?? --multiple authors

Here's the deal. This is the second time we've migrated this forum database. The first time was the switch between the phpBB forums we used until 2007 until the switch to Simple Machines. That first migration was buggy. We knew it was buggy, but it didn't affect the performance of the forums. What we didn't know, is that those bugs would pop up in the transfer from SMF to IP. I'm not a techie, so I can't explain why, but those old posts from when we first launched the phpBB forums have been bumped to the top. As far as we can tell, all the posts made before Aug. 10, 2010 transferred over. They are just really, stupidly hard to find.

The easiest way to find your active threads, is to go into your profile. It's the drop down menu that's next to your handle in the top right hand corner of the boards. Select "My content". That should take you to a listing of your most recently posted to threads. You can click on any of those and and you'll be taken to the thread. From there you can post to bump up your threads.

Sorry about this, we're just as baffled and annoyed by this as you are.

If you're one of the handful of people (I'm one of them) who for some reason don't have all your posts associated with your profile, you can also use the search function. That's what I'm doing.

Tutorial for seeing Active Threads on Forums.

This will have to be saved for each board you frequent, as well as the sub-forums; atleast until the mods & admins fix the problem on the larger scale.

1. Scroll to the bottom the board page which lists all the threads; see picture below:

Posted Image

2. The will be an option called "Click here to show Filter Options". Right click on this to expand the feature selections.

3. The menu will expand to include the following options "Show Type" , "Sort by", "Sort Directions", & "Time Frame"; see picture below:

Posted Image

4. To show current/active threads imput the following info:

 • Show Type: Topics Open
 • Sort By: Order: Last Post
 • Sort Directions: Z-A
 • Time Frame: Show All

5.
IMPORTANT!! remeber to check the box marked "Remember" to save the options for that forum! otherwise you will have to re-submit Filter options next time you visit the forum/subforum.

6. Click Go. and you should be set for that forum/subforum.

** method does not cover topics who show no name or date in reply section **

Formatting Issues And how to fix them.... -- Taei, Al Jenn 9/12/10

There are a few things that have changed formatting wise between DM 7.0 and the new DM 8.0. Since we're not all as tech savvy I figured a how to fix it guide was in order. <img src='http://www.dragonmou...DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The main thing that has changed between the old forum and the new one is the size formatting. The new formatting is as follows:

Size 1

Size 1
Size 2
Size 2
Size 3
Size 3
Size 4
Size 4
Size 5
Size 5
Size 6
Size 6
Size 7
Size 7

For the about same size as the old formatting you would use the following....

Size 1 = 8 pt
Size 2 = 10 pt
Size 3 = 11 pt
Size 4 = 12 pt
Size 5 = 18 pt
Size 6 = 24 pt
Size 7 = 32 pt

If I find any more thing that have changed I'll try to post them here. If anyone has any problems with the new formatting, feel free to message me if you need help. <img src='http://www.dragonmou...DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

--------------------------

You can now add media by

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apJJ0NzOXEg&feature=player_embedded

^ Jason is awesome...

You have to use closing tags or your formatting will not work!

For example
hello dr. nick how are you?

That will
not work unless it looks like
hello dr. nick how are you?
See the end tag.

Glowing now is:

[background=red]Red background behind this text[/background]

Red background behind this text

You can now link people in your posts like myself
[member=Al Jenn Mael]

Al Jenn Mael

In order to quote someone it no longer is [ quote author=Al Jenn ] it is [ quote name='al jenn' ]

Hello

You have to use the ' ' around the name in addition to name instead of author.

You can also post spoilers without people seeing by using [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ]

Spoiler

Pretty much everything else is the same.

Does anyone know how to get font larger than size "7" or font 24 on DM 7? I played around with it and couldn't figure it out.
A: You can't go any higher than 7. Anything other than 1-7 will show up just at regular font size like you had no formatting what-so-ever.

Al, you did forget one thing. How do you make those cool text-boxes?

A: The ones that are simply a box outlining the text is the code function, which you get by using the following:
Text here[/ code]

Just take the space out after the /.

How do I change my Signature and Avatar? And what's the difference between that and My Photo? -jenniferl 8/30/10

Avatar and "My Photo"

Alright. look up at the top right hand corner. You should see your handle, with a little triangle pointing down next to it. Click on the triangle. There's a list of options. Select "my profile". Ta dah! This is your public profile. Up at the top, you'll see a button that says "edit my profile" Click it.

This takes you to a screen where you can manage different parts of your publicly available profile. You can share as much or as little as you want about yourself here.

You can see a menu option that allows you to update your avatar. You can use the editor there to update your avatar. Old rules still apply here and all images need to be hosted somewhere to show.

You'll also notice that it has the option to add a photo to your profile. The difference between the avatar and the photo is that your avatar will appear anywhere on the site that is associated with your content, like next to your forum posts. The photo is only viewable to registered members who click on your profile. So be aware that whatever you post on your profile is going to be viewable by the 14K+ people who have registered for Dragonmount over the years. All Avatars must be 100 x 100.

Signature

Alright. look up at the top right hand corner.

You can see a menu option that allows you to update your signature. You can use the editor there to update your signature. Old rules still apply here and all images need to be hosted somewhere to show. All signatures must be 125 x 500.

------------------------------------------

What on earth does the following error mean when editing your profile? And how do you get around it?

Quote
[#10210] You are not allowed to use that image extension on this board.

A: Any images used must be a gif or jpg. So you'll have to convert your image.

--------------------------------------
Auld Manriva:

I have a very useful tip for you all, and it's sort of a secret/easter egg/hunk o'swag... and coming from a Pirate you KNOW thats choice stuff. During "Performance Mode" as we seem to be in a lot lately, one CAN indeed change one's siggy and avatar and various other info pertaining to your profile... The trick is accessing your "Control Panel"..

1. Click the generic "Picture" at top right.
2. Select "My Settings" (then ignore the dropdown menu below "Settings" on next page)
3. Click "Profile" (two places to the right of Settings in same row)
4. On the next page, Select "Change Siggy" in the dropdown below Profile... BINGO! You're In

This will work for an avatar as well, though I'm not too sure about most of the other stuff. I KNOW it does not work for the "Picture" function.

Performance Mode- What it is, why we use it, and what it breaks. -claireducky

A large quantity of the questions we get on the bug board are related to features that are down because of Performance Mode. I think it would be beneficial to explain what Performance Mode is.

Right now, we've got a more server-intensive software running DM than we had previously. That combined with our increased traffic leading up to ToM release has made for an unhappy server that gets load spikes. When we get a load spike, DM goes down, and that's not fun for ANYONE. In the interest of keeping DM up as much as we can, we'll be putting the site in Performance Mode frequently to remove some of the load from the server.

What it does: Simply put, Performance Mode will take away some of the fancier features of the site that take more resources to use. By removing access to these services, it can keep the load on the server down and you can continue to post your theories on how Rand is really a Jedi and Callandor is a lightsaber.

What it breaks:
Performance mode disables a lot of things, and this is probably only a partial list. I will update it as I come up with more of them:

Viewing Profiles (yours or anybody else's)
Topic Marking (forums might always appear to have new threads when they don't-- or not appear to have new threads when they do)
Active Users (Who's online)
Searching in any shape or form
Private Messaging
New Content/My Content

If you have a problem with one of the above listed topics-- check to see if we're in performance mode (the note at the top of the site will say so). If we are, then please refrain from starting yet ANOTHER thread about these issues-- it will likely get ignored.

I need something from DM7! Where is it, and how do I copy it here? --by Red2111

Seems we can get onto the DM7 boards for a short while. Dont know how long this will be accessable for though

DM7

Incase tehre are threads on DM 7.0 that you wish to pull, but you aren't sure how, heres a brief tuturial on the easiest way i've found. hope this is helpful and enjoy :myrddraal:

1. Select Print located in the option bar above the first post of every new page. below i've circled it in red

Posted Image

2. Selecting this will bring the entire topic into a new browser, no matter what page on the topic the Print button is hit. Highlight the text and right click to copy the sleected text.

Posted Image

Posted Image

3. Be sure not to select the cirlced portion above when coping over a thread; it makes it harder to manipulate in the word doc. this is just a personal preferrance of mine though.

4. Next open your favorite Word Processor and past the copied text into a "New Document"

Posted Image

5. You can now manipulate the text as you would a normal Word Doc.

6. To prevent multiple people copying the same thread, please post in the thread that you've already archived it.

7. Happy Transferring!

My profile says I have 90 or so posts in a particular forum - all save one were on the old (2nd) dragonmount, all before August 2010 (I think) - is there anywhere I can access them?

You would need to go to the forum and search for yourself as the author i think - the time and date stamps were lost in the shift over to DM8.

not sure if this is the right place to ask but I would like to know if it's possible to make hml anchors inside posts. I have some long blog posts where html anchors would be very helpful. I tried putting an anchor inside html or code square brackets but that doesn't work.

Anchors are not supported in the board software we are using.  Instead, the practice is to split large documents into multiple posts within a thread, as shown in this particular thread. This allows for the linking to an individual post much like using anchor links on a web page.
