Are you sitting comfortably? Got a drink/food/other supplies to hand? Excellent, then let's begin...

Now that you've learned all about navigating the Forums, you've naturally decided to explore a little and you're wondering just what all those boards at the bottom of the index page are for.

Welcome to the Role Play (RP) boards of Dragonmount.biggrin.gif

The person in charge here is the PSW Community Admin (or Head Honcho wink.gif ). That would be Winterwinds and you can contact him at the following address:

Winter@dragonmount.com

He doesn't bite (often) so don't be afraid to ask for help. smile.gif

The boards look quite scary don't they? You're thinking it must be really difficult and confusing to join the Role Play aren't you? smile.gif That's where I come in. wink.gif I'm going to walk you through it step by step and show you how easy it really is!

First, if you don't know what role play is and have never done it before, here's a run down of some of the main terms you'll hear used.

Role Play (RP) - Role Play is the act of telling the story of a character you have created. You take on their character and write each post from their point of view (pov) including descriptions of their actions or events which they experience and also any conversations they have. Although you can write alone, the point of role play is to interact with other people's characters so, in a role play thread, you will usually take it in turns with another writer to make a post. Every thread you participate in will forward your character's story; for example, helping them to learn a new skill or telling of a journey they make or perhaps a new person they meet. As you continue to role play, your character will grow and change just like any normal person. For instance, you may join as a Novice but after many role plays, your character will become an Accepted and eventually an Aes Sedai. The best way to see how this works is to visit our Role Play boards and read existing threads written by members of the RP Group you wish to join.
Dragon Reborn Portal Stone World (DR PSW) - Dragon Reborn is the name given to the world within which we create our stories. A portal stone world is essentially a reflection of Randland. It works in a similar fashion but the storyline and characters will not be identical.
Dragon Reborn Role Play Group (DR RP Group) - The general term used for the groups found within the PSW, such as the Wolfkin, the White Tower and the Children of the Light. You will choose which RP Group to join based on the kind of character you want to write about. So, if you wish to be Whitecloak, you will join the Children of the Light; if you wish to be a Trolloc or Fade, you'll join the Congress of the Shadow.
Biography (Bio) - A basic outline of your character containing information about their age, gender, nationality, personality and appearance. This is also where you provide a brief history of your character from birth or childhood up to their present situation (for instance, you could end with their choice to join the White Tower as a novice, or with their eyes turning yellow and forcing them to leave home for the Wolfkin to find them). The details required for a bio will differ from one RP Group to another.
Bio Checker - The person in each RP Group who is responsible for reading your bio and ensuring that the information you've given meets the requirements of the Group. They also check that character details are believable and accurate, such as no Aiel turning up at the Tower to become novices, no 7ft tall Cairhienin people and nobody except a Wolfkin with golden/yellow eyes. Once they've checked and approved it, they'll post it on the Bio board. A full list of who the Bio Checkers are and how you can contact them can be found HERE.
Cross Check (CC) - A Bio Checker from another RP Group than your own will cross check the bio once it's been posted to make sure the original Bio Checker hasn't missed any mistakes. They will also double check for any conflicts with other RP Groups. For example, the Freelanders will sometimes be asked to specifically check a bio that contains references to a noble family as they have control over all nobles within the PSW. Your Bio Checker will keep you informed of possible issues. Until the CC is done, you will NOT be able to RP.
Main Plotline - The main plotline consists of major role plays which are turning points or important events in our history and which impact the whole world. For instance, the Bowl of Winds is part of the main plotline as is the kidnapping of the Daughter of the Nine Moons. These are the stories which shape our characters' lives in the run up to The Last Battle. Be aware that they don't match the Books exactly. Certain events happened differently, or indeed didn't happen at all, in the PSW. There is a Main Plotline board which outlines these events for you which you can find HERE.

Not too complicated is it? For further commonly used abbreviations please check this thread HERE. Let's continue with a look at the boards which contain all the answers you should ever need.

Now, let me tell you a little about the RP boards and their uses. The first few boards are general ones for help, advice and socialising.

The Welcome Inn

This is where you start. Begin by reading over all of the stickied threads (right at the top of the board) as they contain vital help and information to make your experience as enjoyable and straightforward as possible. It also saves the Staff having to repeat themselves several times a day. Once you're done reading, why not post an introduction thread and let our members know that you've arrived? You don't have to but it's a nice fast way to get to know your fellow RPers.

The Welcome Inn also has two child/sub boards.

Biographies

This is where you will find a thread with instructions on what your biography (Bio) should contain and tips on how to write it well. You will also find details on where to send your completed bio. Once you have sent your bio to the correct bio checker for your RP group, it will be approved and then posted here for Cross Checking (CCing) by a Bio Checker from another RP Group. When you see it has been marked as Cross Checked (CCd) you are ready to start RPing.

You can also read copies of the bios that other members have submitted on this board.

Planning and Discussion

You can request RP partners, discuss plans for a specific RP, or chill out and swap chat with the other RP Community members here. You'll also discover some threads to assist you with RPing, like hints to help you get over writing blocks and various discussions which are RP related.

This board has its own child board for planning and announcing anything to do with the Main Plotline, such as the "Bowl of Winds" or "Cleansing the Taint" which are major turning points in the series and involve people from more than one RP Group. In other words, they aren't personal RPs but instead change the world in which our characters live.

Still with me? Great! On we go.

Our RP activities take place in two different ways at Dragonmount and the next board you can see is not part of our official PSW. Instead, it's open to any subject matter at all and to anyone who wishes to uses it. There's no need to apply to use this board nor to submit a bio. It's very relaxed and informal.

Turnings of the Wheel: Revolution One

This is the simplest way to RP at DM. Our Turnings of the Wheel (ToW) board, which we call Revolution One (or Rev One), is a public board and it's open to all Dragonmount members. You only need three things to write on this board:

- A fun plotline on any subject at all (as long as it's PG 13). It doesn't have to be about Wheel of Time.

- A great character to tell the story. No need to submit a biography.

- Usually at least one other person to write with you so your characters can interact. You can of course write a Solo RP, in other words, by yourself.

That's it! Start a thread and jump right in once you've read the Guidelines thread and if you have any questions at all you can post on the sub board which is for normal discussion and out of character (OOC) chat.

Alternatively, you can contact our ToW Moderator, (currently vacant so please contact Winterwinds instead). He'll be delighted to assist you. The ToW contact email is:

The Dragon Reborn Portal Stone World (DR PSW)

This is the most important way to RP at Dragonmount as the PSW is based purely on the Wheel of Time series. Subsequently, it's also more complex and the requirements to participate are stricter... but don't be put off!

You'll have read about Portal Stone Worlds in the Books. Our own PSW closely mirrors Randland but with some significant differences to allow for creative license and to avoid infringing on copyright.

The next set of boards you can see are the public boards for each DR (Dragon Reborn) RP Group. These boards are OOC or out of character. In other words, you're posting as yourself, not your character.

On these boards you can ask questions and get help that is more detailed for your chosen RP Group than you'll find on the Biographies board.

Each RP Group has its own Group Leader (RGL) and Assitant Group Leader/s (AGL) as well as various other Staff such as Bio Checkers. They'll all be more than willing to talk to you, advise you on your bio and generally point you in the right direction.

Remember to be polite and respectful and you can't possibly go wrong. :) Start off by checking the Group's stickied threads at the top of the board as there may be a sign in thread that you need to post on. This will differ from one Group to another.

After your bio has been approved and/or CCd, you'll be added to the usergroup for that RP Group. At that point you'll be able to see various private sub boards which are only available to members.

You can find all Staff contact details and histories of each RP Group plus further information at The Welcome Inn board HERE.

The next section will tell you about the RP Groups in their own words.

Band of the Red Hand (DR RP Group)

Grab yourself a Bandweiser and join us in the Citadel. We at the Band are what we like to call "quality assurance" people. We assure that those we battle (Shaido, Seanchan, Trollocs, door-to-door salesmen) are ruthlessly slaughtered in a manner that leaves them going, "Wow, those people knew what they were doing. I'd go shake their hands, but I can't seem to find my own hands at the moment." There are several divisions you can choose from. If you like the feel of wind in your hair as you're riding down on the trembling front lines, then the Cavalry is the place for you. However, if getting into people's faces is more your thing (not to mention if you prefer to harass those dumb cavaliers), then it's the Infantry for you. However, if you're a sneaky individual and feel the need to hide from the enemy (or hide from the fool Infantry before feathering their backsides), then the Scouts want you. Of course, if you want to sit back, relax, and just pepper the enemy from afar ("enemy" being defined as the other team, the Cavalry, the Infantry, and the Scouts), then the Archers have a bow with your name on it. Finally, if you're a conscientious objector (or just a bad fighter), come to the Medics and Services. We assure you that they get the last laugh, especially since they're the ones that repair the other four divisions after their infighting.

Black Tower (DR RP Group)

"Can you feel the call of saidin? Does the male half of the One Power throb in your veins? Do you have the discipline and the strength of will to survive the rigours of channeling and the taint? The Dragon Reborn has declared amnesty for your kind - once despised and feared, pitied and rejected - will you answer his call?" The Black Tower RP Group is the Dragon Reborn Portal Stone World's haven for channeling males (other than those fiendish Dreadlords in Shayol Ghul). The majority of the characters who choose this Group are Asha'man - men who wield the One Power - however others may choose to join the Group with non-channeling characters known simply as Civilians. If magic and mayhem are in your nature, then perhaps a character here would be one worth your choosing!

Children of the Light (DR RP Group)

Do you want to protect the innocent and stamp out evil? Are you interested in digging for the truth - no matter what it takes - to rid the world of Darkfriends and Witches? The Children of the Light may be the place for you.

Whether you wish to fight in the Army of the Light, punish wrongdoers as a member of the Hand of the Light, or act as a spy in our PSW's creation the Order of the Light, the Children of the Light provide a haven for those of all nationalities who wish to serve Our Creator. Everyone is welcome - from the most rabid of believers to the more liberal interpreters of Lothair Mantelar's works.

Congress of the Shadow (DR RP Group)

CotS is the only RP group where we are all openly evil. It is also the only one you can be nominally part of while also being in another RP Group (A Darkfriend suldam, or a Darkfriend Warder)!

CotS is the RP Group, however, for those of us who want to be openly evil, who don't want to hide amongst the shadows, pretending to be friendly, and praising the Light, it is for those of us who wish to destroy the Borderlands, ravage the southern nations, and free the Great Lord!

You see, CotS is one of the most varied, and open RP Groups at Dragonmount. You can be a Darkfriend Assassin, maybe a courtesan, or a Dreadlord, using the Power to destroy all who stand before you. You can even be a Trolloc, and live in the Blight, or be a Myrddraal, and command fist upon fist of Trollocs, ripping apart Lightfool armies, even Darkhounds are now an option, sending eerie howls into the night. Either way, CotS freedom of choice makes it a great RP Group.

Freelanders (DR RP Group)

The lands are rife with war and strife. The Dark One seeks to own, All that you have and hold and love: The seeds of Darkness sown.

It is said in some corners that the White Tower pulls the weaves of the Pattern and in others that the Dark One’s minions seek to shape the future into some bleak desolation of our world. When Power faces Power, Nation faces Nation and Black Coats face seven-shades of shawls, who will be left to defend you and yours? Who will take up arms to guard your lives and your ways of life? Take your destiny into your own hands! No lessons but life lessons. No boundaries but those of your own devising. Be as free as the wind. Join the Freelanders…

…It is your life, lead it as you will!

Warders (DR RP Group)

Our RP Group is more than just warriors bonded to Aes Sedai. Many men and women choose never to bond and instead dedicate their lives to protecting all Aes Sedai and the White Tower itself. These individuals are Tower Guards. All who undergo the training will become Tower Guards, if even for a very brief moment before their chosen Aes Sedai bonds them as a Gaidin. If you find the calling to protect Aes Sedai and all that they stand for, join the Warders and begin your journey toward becoming one of the greatest fighters the Wheel of Time has ever known. By accepting the challenge and joining us, you too can stand on the slopes of Shayol Ghul and defy the Shadow during the Last Battle.

White Tower (DR RP Group)

Lightning crashes from your fingertips, you hold a man's life in the palm of your hands, the world waits as you pull the strings behind the throne. These are all possible outcomes of becoming an Aes Sedai in the White Tower. It's the ultimate power and at times the most humbling of experiences. If you had powers such as these, what would you do with them? Would you help to save the world from the onset of the shadow or perhaps would you work towards a darker purpose?

Here, at the White Tower, we welcome you to write to your heart's content and find out your true path.

Visit our website to get an indepth look at what it means to be a member of the WT RP Group:
http://aliciawilkerson.com/whitetower/

All the Ajahs found within the Books are included in the White Tower role play. Yes, that's right, even the one that doesn't really exist. *looks* It doesn't matter how much time you have, what your skill level is, or your gender. We have a home here for everyone. When you join the White Tower, you start your journey role playing as a Novice, and you will gain experience and develop your character as you progress through the ranks of Accepted and finally Aes Sedai! During this time you'll make friends and enemies galore (inside the RP world-- outside of it all you'll find are friends). After your raising, you may make up to three characters of any rank at all to triple your RP possiblities! Whatever you do, and whatever Ajah you choose, the main thing is that you'll have a great time!

So come and meet us, and see what you think.

Wolfkin (DR RP Group)

Do you find your eyesight sharpening? Do you find yourself howling at the full moon? Have you been suffering from excessive hair growth? Have your eyes adopted a distinct yellow shade? If your answer to all of those questions is yes, then you might have hepatitis! But if you get checked and it comes back negative then you DEFINITELY belong in the Wolfkin RP Group!

Whether you choose to be a Ranger, a Tracker, a Sage or a Watcher, we welcome you with open arms to join our big happy family! So join the Wolfkin! If you RP you get cookies!

Yes, finally, we come to the most sacred section of all! Our treasure trove! Our actual role play boards.cool.gif

The last set of boards contains all the wealth of our cumulative writing efforts. Or at least the writing which hasn't been lost to us through Dragonmount's various Forum moves over the years. laugh.gif

These boards are split primarily by area, North, South, East and West and they cover specific nations which are listed in their respective descriptions on the index page.

There are then various sub boards within the areas which cater to established "homes" for certain groups. For example, you'll see The Citadel which is home to the Band, The Stedding which is home to the Wolfkin and The Farm which is home to the Black Tower.

North (DR)
East (DR)
South (DR)
West (DR)
The Blight (DR)
The Citadel (DR)
The Farm (DR)
The Fortress of Light (DR)
The High Seas (DR)
Seanchan (DR)
Tar Valon (DR)
The Threefold Land (DR)
The Warders Yard (DR)
The White Tower (DR)
The Wolfkin Stedding (DR)

Every single RP we write is posted here and fits into one of these areas or sub boards. A Band recruit who is doing training will likely post at The Citadel whereas, if the Band is on a campaign and fighting battles, they would post on the area board for whatever country they are currently travelling in. All of these boards are open to every RP Community member to allow for inter-Group RPs so you're welcome to read what other members are up to as well as to post your own threads. Please note that you may not post here until your bio has been approved and CCd.

You should also remember to keep posts in character (IC) only. If you're not taking part in an RP then you shouldn't be posting anything else here. Likewise, don't just jump in to somebody else's RP. That would be considered a serious breach of RP etiquette. You can find more guide lines about etiquette on this thread HERE.

Congratulations on making it this far with me. I told you it wasn't as scary as it looked didn't I? :) Just keep in mind that you're not on your own. The Staff are here to help so don't feel overwhelmed.

To sum everything up nicely, here's your step by step guide to joining the DR PSW along with a few helpful links.

1) Drop by The Welcome Inn and Biographies boards. Check out the stickies and any links to further information. Introduce yourself and join in with the chat/discussion threads if you wish.

2) Decide what kind of character you'd like to write a bio for and which RP Group you'll then belong to. For example, if you wish to create a biography (bio) for an Asha'man, that means you'll be applying to the Black Tower (DR RP Group) or, if you decide to become a Novice, you'd apply to the White Tower (DR RP Group). On the other hand, if you'd like to be a general character such as a merchant, a blacksmith, a gleeman or the daughter of a noble House... the Freelanders (DR RP Group) is your destination.

For further information:

Our PSW Wiki is HERE.

The Wheel of Time Concordance is HERE.

WoT Encyclopaedia is HERE.

3) Write and submit your bio to the relevant Bio Checker. Visit your chosen RP Group and ask the Staff and members for help if necessary (after reading the Group's stickied threads).

4) Wait for your bio to be approved, posted and CCd and for the RP Group Leader to have you added to the usergroup.

5) Begin to RP, make lots of friends and, above all, HAVE FUN! :D

We look forward to having you join the DR PSW and to sharing your WoT writing experience.
