Drummer for the Band's Band - It's A Knockout (Winner: Neil Peart)

Corki

Recommended Posts

After a couple of months break, The Band of the Red Hand returns to our search for our Dream Band. So far, the following have been nominated for our Dream Band:

- Carlos Santana will be on Guitar

- Geddy Lee is the bass player

- Within Temptation's Sharon den Adel as the female vocalist

- Freddie Mercury of Queen won the position of Male Vocalist

Next and our penultimate stop on our list is Drummers. Our final destination will be Keyboardists in August. You managed to nominate thirteen (2) Drummers to challenge for the honour, and Corki has filled the remaining fourteen positions to compete the line up for the position in the Band's Dream Band. The Drummer that makes it into the Band's Dream Band is the one that wins this "It's A Knockout" contest. It is basically down to you to pick who gets that important position.

"It's A Knockout" remains with the longer format this month - and this means there are 16 drummers instead of 8!

"It's a Knockout" - Format

For those of you who have not been involved with a "It's A Knockout" thread before, the rules are quite simple. The Band of the Red Hand is DM's travel, music and eating out Social Group, and "It's a Knockout" is a knock out competition to find out the winner of the chosen category (past categories include Micheal Jackson songs, Classical Music, One Hit Wonders). Each day, 2 or 4 Drummers will be posted in either 1 or 2 ties, along with links so you can listen to the music and skill if you do not know it, and all you have to do is post which drummer you think is the better of the two in the tie. After a day, the votes will be counted, and the winning drummer will progress to the next round, until we only have 1 drummer left as the winner at the end of the competition - who will take their place in the Band's Dream Band. It's very simple, so I look forward to seeing you getting involved!

So without further a-do, let the competition begin!

THE CHOSEN DRUMMERS

1. Phil Collins (of Genesis)

Collins is a multi-talented musician, and is best known as the drummer and vocalist of progressive rock group, Genesis. He has also had a successful career as a soloist. He has won 7 Grammy Awards, an Oscar, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and one of three artists to have sold 100m albums worldwide as a solo artist and a member of a group.

2. Ginger Baker (of Cream)

Baker is an English Drummer, best known for being part of Cream and Blind Faith. According to the Rolling Stone magazine, Baker was the third best drummer ever. His drumming attracted attention for its flamboyance, showmanship and his use of two bass drums instead of the conventional single bass kick drum. While an established rock drummer, he prefers to be referred to as a jazz drummer.

3. Neil Peart (of Rush)

The firm favourite to win this contest. You just need to see YYZ, and you will see why. Peart is the drummer and lyricist for Canadian rockers, Rush. Over the years, Peart has incorporated various elements into his drum playing, including jazz and swing. He is often recognized internationally as the best drummer ever. Oh, and he has a 360 degree drum kit - mega cool!

4. Steve Smith (of Journey)

I feel sorry for Smith being first up against Peart. Best known as the drummer for Journey, Smith has worked for many artists over the years. Smith is primarily a traditional grip player, though he also uses matched grip. His session work has meant it has worked with many pop acts and world artists.

5. Terry Bozzio (of Frank Zappa)

Bozzio started playing a makeshift drum set at the age of 6. By the age of 13, he was having drum lessons. In 1975, he started touring with Frank Zappa. He is noted for performing Zappa's The Black Page, a piece of music designed to be a "musician's nightmare" a page so filled with notes as to be almost black - see the clip below! His drum set is quite something to look at!

6. Buddy Rich

Rich was an American jazz drummer, who was known for his irtuosic technique, power, groove, and speed. He often used contrasting techniques to keep long drum solos from getting mundane. Aside from his energetic explosive displays, he would go into quieter passages.

7. Lars Ulrich (of Metallica)

Ulrich is the Danish drummer of the American heavy metal band, Metallica. He moved to the USA at the age of 17 to continue his tennis career, but ended up as a drummer! His drumming style has changed over the years. Early on in the 1980s, he was known for his fast, aggressive and, more or less, basic thrash beats. He simplified his drum rhythms in order to fit the simplification in Metallica's overall musical style during the 1990s and 2000s, but has returned to his 1980s style for Metallica's latest album.

8. Clive Bunker (of Jethro Tull)

Bunker is the original drummer for the British band, Jethro Tull. He then played with many, many bands once he had left Jethro Tull. He has also released a solo album.

9. Carl Palmer (of ELP)

Palmer is an English Drummer, who has worked with many great acts, including  Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Because he has played for a variety of bands, Palmer has a variety to his drum playing. He started off more jazzy in his playing, and moved onto playing the double bass drum more frequently.

10. Roger Meddows-Taylor (of Queen)

Meddows-Taylor is a talented drummer, well known for his big sound, as well as considered an influence on 1970s and 1980s drumming. He also wrote some of Queen's hits, including Radio Ga Ga. His other band is Smile, and he has worked with many musicians over the years.

11. Mike Portnoy (of Dream Theater)

Portney is the drummer and backing vocalist for the progressive metal band Dream Theater. He is known for his drumming prowess and technical ability, which has led him to winning over 20 awards from the Modern Drummer magazine. He is the second youngest person (after Neil Peart) to be inducted into the Modern Drummer's Hall of Fame.

12. Chad Smith (of Red Hot Chilli Peppers)

Smith is best known as being the longtime and current drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Other bands include Chickenfoot and the instrumental band Chad Smith's Bombastic Meatbats. Smith also uses a typical rock drum set up.

13. Al Jackson (of the MGs)

Jackson was best known as a founding member of Booker T. & the M.G.s, who were a group of session musicians. Jackson was called "The Human Timekeeper" for his drumming ability. Jackson became one of the most important and influential drummers in the history of recorded music at Stax, providing an instantly recognizable backbeat behind the label's artists.

14. Ringo Starr (of The Beatles)

Richard Starkey is better known by his stage name of Ringo Starr. And The Beatles aside, Starr was the narrator for the children's TV programme, Thomas the Tank Engine. Starr was musically creative, and his contribution to the band's music has received high praise from notable drummers in more recent times. He describes himself as "your basic offbeat drummer with funny fills". He is also technically limited by being a left-handed person playing a right-handed kit.

15. John Bonham (of Led Zeppelin)

John Bonham was best known as Led Zep's drummer. Bonham was esteemed for his speed, power, fast right foot, distinctive sound, and "feel" for the groove. Many of his fellow drummers feel he is the best drummer of all time. So, does that mean Neil Peart might have a challenger?

16. Ian Paice (of Deep Purple)

eep Purple's drummer is Ian Paice. He is the only founding member of the band still performing with the group and the only member to appear on every album the band has released. He likes touring, and often does so with Deep Purple tribute acts.
