Bass Player for the Band's Band - It's A Knockout (Winner: Geddy Lee)

Corki

Recommended Posts

"It's A Knockout" returns again this month as the Band of the Red Hand continues to create its Dream Band. We have already filled the position of Guitarist, which was won by Carlos Santana. Up next is the Bass Player, with Male and Female Vocals, Drummer and Keyboardist to come. Eleven (11) Bassists got nominated to challenge for the honour, and a further five (5) have been added by Corki to compete for the position in the Band's Dream Band. The Bass Player that makes it into the Band's Dream Band is the one that wins this "It's A Knockout" contest. It is basically down to you to pick who gets that important position.

"It's A Knockout" remains with the longer format this month - and this means there are 16 bass players instead of 8!

"It's a Knockout" - Format

For those of you who have not been involved with a "It's A Knockout" thread before, the rules are quite simple. The Band of the Red Hand is DM's travel and music ORG, and "It's a Knockout" is a knock out competition to find out the winner of the chosen category (past categories include Micheal Jackson songs, Classical Music, One Hit Wonders). Each day, 2 bass players will be posted, along with a link so you can listen to some of their bass playing skills if you do not know it, and all you have to do is post who you think is the better bass player of the two. After a day, the votes will be counted, and the winning bass player will progress to the next round, until we only have 1 bass player left as the winner at the end of the competition - who will take their place in the Band's Dream Band. It's very simple, so I look forward to seeing you getting involved!

So without further a-do, let the competition begin!

THE CHOSEN BASS PLAYERS

1. John Myung

He developed a unique playing style high on the neck, adding counterpoint lines and melodies to the band's material which are not typically heard in traditional "rock" music. He was also a heavy user of effects not typically heard on the bass guitar to better bring out his distinctive style.

2. Flea (Michael Peter Balzary)

His work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers incorporates several musical styles, ranging from aggressive slap bass to more subdued and melodic techniques. Aside from the RHCP, he has collaborated with many artists, including Jane's Addiction, Thom Yorke, The Mars Volta and Alanis Morissette. Drawing influences from funk music and punk rock, Flea centers his bass playing on simplicity and minimalism while viewing complexity as a device that should be used in moderation.

3. Victor Wooten

I just want this guy to be on bass. He plays with Bela Fleck and is an amazing instrumentalist. He does wonderful, wonderful things with the bass guitar. And he's pretty. We need pretty people in the band's band so that I can put posters of them up in my quarters. And maybe swoon a little.

4. Les Claypool

Claypool is the bass player for Primus, an American funk metal group. He is known for his funky, creative playing style, mixing finger-tapping, flamenco-like strumming, a slap technique, and has been influenced by Geddy Lee. He is also part of his own group called "Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade".

5. Steve Harris

Bass player and main songwriter for Iron Maiden. He is also the only member to appear in the group during its while duration. He is most known for his "galloping" bass lines.

6. Chris Wolstenholme

Wolstenholme is the bassist and backing vocalist for the British group, Muse. He is known for his distorted bass, created by his amplifier.

7. Geddy Lee

Rush, that's all I need to say... He is an award winning musician, inspiring many players (several in this contest) and being influential in the rock and heavy metal genres.

8. Paul McCartney

McCartney is best known for being part of the Beatles. He has also had success as a solo artist, and with his own group, Wings. The Guinness World Records as the most successful musician and composer in popular music history, with 60 gold discs and sales of 100 million singles.

9. Jim Sheppard

Founding member of Nevermore and a highly skilled bassist. And he is also a chef!

10. Sting

A multi-award winning performer, with an Oscar nomination to his name as well! He has had a sparkling career as both a solo artist and as part of Police.

11. James Jamerson

Has played on more No.1 hits than Elvis, The Beatles, Beach Boys and Rolling Stones combined; and was the main bassist for Funk Brothers, from the Motown label.

12. Simon Gallup

Simon Gallup is the bassist of the post-punk band The Cure. He joined the band in 1979. Despite a few hiatuses, he is the second longest serving member of the group.

13. John Entwistle

John Entwistle was the bass player for The Who, who died of a heart attack in 2002. His approach used pentatonic (five pitches per octave) lead lines, and a then-unusual trebly sound created by roundwound RotoSound steel bass strings. He had a collection of over 200 instruments at the time of his death.

14. Jaco Pastorius

(If Carlsberg did Bassists), Quite possibly the best bassist ever! Just a bit more on Pastorius. His playing style was noteworthy for containing intricate solos in the higher register. His innovations also included the use of harmonics and the "singing" quality of his melodies on fretless bass.

15. Troy Sanders

An excellent bassist, is a master of advanced bass techniques like bass sweeping(which is a lot harder to do on bass than guitar).

16. Mani

Reached fame with Madchester legends Stone Roses, later joined Primal Scream. Has a unique blend of rock style with a distinct dance/dub groove. And, he is a true Manc.
