Mortal Mists

The chill on the air cut like a razor’s edge

The dawn has just broken, and all is as it should be

Morning’s dew glistens o’er grass, tree, and hedge

Workers pause their labors at what they see

The silent hush of morning is soon broken

For at the Ranch, all must earn their keep

These simple-looking workers in Cairhien

Have secrets which from the world are hidden deep

Soon all in the Ranch are at their tasks

Farm beasts call out to each other in their midst

But the day’s tranquil routine will not last

Carnage comes in the form of mist

Already hot and tired from their work

These Friends of the Shadow relish the cool caress

But their comfort turns to concern as they work

For soon they find themselves completely vision-less

Far outside the realms of Space and Time

Behind a weak’ning boundary wove by Men

The Great Lord tests the bounds another time

Out through the seams, dark bubbles seep and run

Throughout the Pattern, these miasma drift

Until they catch on threads and finally burst

One catches in Cairhien, its evil swift

And latches onto mist, as if suffering from thirst

Whiteness and fresh it did encompass

The entire ranch unaware of its feat

Until groaning sounds filled the mist amass

Making the vast whiteness alive and hungry for meat

It started slowly, maybe one or two creatures

A dog, a horse, their panicked sounds muted

Slowly, this dread fog took on new features

Soon, all know that they will soon be dead

A woman’s scream rends itself through the mist

A scream that ends in disturbing bubbling sounds

Something goes soaring, a laborer barely missed

His eyes find her body, mangled and twisted on the ground

One man turns to find his best friend dead

A thing of mist crouched over his still body

It lifts its face to show its blood-stained head

A mist-formed spear, before he warns somebody

The evil takes on many forms and features

May the Great Lord help them survive these creatures

A simple fog, once refreshing and cool

Touched by a bubble, rendering a death drool

Screams...pain...agony...

The delight of the morning's irony

"Help us...Oh help us..."

"Oh fog of death, leave us be..."

Things both man and animal still screaming

The screams and rattles soon abate and still

Slowly, the air of death begins dissipating

Survivors, in relief, watch from the hills

One man ventures slowly into the village

His first place of safety in years

The blood and ichor covers all the foliage

His wife’s half-devoured corpse brings him tears

Movements so sporadic, the Ranch still living

Though random places covered with bloody corpses

Yet the drive to rebuild their sanctum is unyielding

A normal life is all that their hope is

The sun arrived touching the ground...

The wind rolled in freshness abound...

Oh Ranch Rashid, why is this such melancholy

Though this had happened, to rise we hall be

And back through the reaches of Time

The Great Lord still waits for His time...

Lost Friends

Morning came on the wings of time

Birds were signing their morning rhyme

A mist settled into the cracks

Handlers were stuffing morning packs

Tasks handled with care

Cari woke as the sun peaked it's head

Quickly dressed and roused the kids from bed

It was Sam's morning to take them to school

Next door they walked in the morning cool

The kids would be quiet or beware

The twins safely inside the house

Cari went to tend the horse, Mouse

The fog got heavy and feirce

With muffled screams the air did peirce

Cari was about not an easy one to scare

Achet and Seirra did walk in view

The fog enclosed and off a dog flew

Screams of anguish and pain

Streams of blood did rain

Achet's body did tear

Cari didn't have time to scream

Seirra's body in red did gleam

Cari's breathe was gone

The fog too it with it's talon

Her lungs were deprived of air

Time flew by at top speed

And left little for them to heed

But the fog lifted with ease

By the soft blowing breeze

Cari's body gasped for air

But nothing was left of her friends

It was their time to come to their ends

Cari ran to Sam's house

Forgetting about the horse named Mouse

Cari saw her children and did stare

Perfectly happy in Sam's bed

From Cari's eyes her tears fled

Achet and Seira were lost

It seemed there was always a cost

when death strikes those who care.

On Wings Unknown

In a quiet morning screams broke the silence,

What could cause such unwarned violence?

The new man asked himself.

One knife pulled, as he left his room,

Who can see in his misty gloom?

Demus wondered as he made this way.

Blood was spilt, he could see as he walked,

Red and fresh he thought as he stalked,

To find this maker of dread.

Bodies he saw, but no cause of death or reason,

None strangled or mangled in this killing season,

He moved on to find other poor souls.

A farm full of darkfriends, vengeance seemed a clear cause,

But everything he saw gave him pause.

This death was nothing he knew.

A killer by trade, a young man in his prime,

Death was a friend, the shadow hour his time,

But this death flew on wings unknown.

A Mist passed his way,

It’s killing tongue hissed at it’s prey,

Clearly missing it’s treat,

But his favorite lady was luck,

And this time the Mist struck,

And gladly found some other delight.

As the Death Mist passed him by,

He let out a great sigh,

And lifted his head to the sun’s rays.

The Mist fell away, it's path stained with gore,

It’s damage was done, the people speared to the core,

Until the Farm folks could recover their own.

His journey continued to one friend he must find,

His only friend in a world that he knew was unkind,

To make sure she was safe and unharmed.

He found her not far, near her children she hovered,

But her tears were shed, her pain uncovered.

He had no words for her loss.

Instead of repeating words of grief that were strained,

He started to help with the clean up for those who were too pained,

To leave their grief and start in the work.

Though Darkfriend they were and to the shadow bound,

In this haven a rest and a home he had found,

So he tended the farm as he could,

And left grieving for those that should,

And prayed the Mist with it’s bloody twist was finally gone for good.

Soliloquy

note: click here for an accompaniment.. background music while reading it

From far away I have traveled

To seek for what is there to find

To cure a life that was crippled

Escape from pain I left behind

From far away I was no one

A life in the midst of million strangers

Though sired by a powerful nobleman

Emptiness became my unrelenting keepers

From the walls of our castle I have departed

Seeking refuge and chance to fill the void

To a solitude that’s freshly scented

Alter pained breaths that I may have enjoyed

I left a father who never acknowledged me

A mother I loved but now in the heavens

A lover who sought another man’s comfort

And a best friend who comes forth when that lover beckons

Will there be a time that I, just I, would be enough

For people to see that I am pure and true

That valiantly I seek good comfort and love

From the people who are sincere though few

Indeed I ventured from the city walls

And arrived in Rashid Ranch to start a new life

I, the new stableman, cleaner of the stalls

I, the new hired hand, diligent and rife

Though the vicinity is fresh and clear

Though everyone is helpful and kind

And though the surrounding is very dear

Emptiness is still on my mind

I miss my father, who could have loved me

I miss my lover, who could have been loyal

I miss my friend, who could have been trustworthy

And my mother, who survived the fall

As my thoughts swirled with melancholy

My eyes marveled at the morning’s fresh

Dew flowed from every leaf and tree

Comfort and waking up every warm flesh

Formations of white drew nearer, closer

Embracing the field with chilling sweetness

But what is that sound growing thicker?

Groaning echoes like death’s caress

My eyes went awide as a horse vanished in sight

Leaving a mixture of water and blood

Death neighs covered by the monster’s sound of delight

As if seeking sustenance, a flesh for its food

Closer it came to the ranch encompassing

Extending for me, reaching for my body

Run! I thought. Thy death is fast approaching

But no, I stayed, waiting for it calmly

As it neared my body, screams I heard from afar

Massive murder, it is indeed happening

Sounds of agony produced by this white bizarre

Terror and fright, the ranch is succumbing

But I just sat there, waiting for the mist

Staring at it with final resignation

And when it enveloped me in his fist

I closed my eyes and waited for my termination

At first there was silence

Only freshness and chill

And then after a modicum of instance

It is death I started to feel

Air was pumped out of my lungs

As I grasped for it with automatic vengeance

Clinging to life away from the mist of fangs

But defeated I was as I lost my sense

As I stared at nothing my mind went whirling

For I know I am about to fade away

Numbness encompassed me, death enveloping

I was just lying there, realizing this is my last day

I felt peaceful, I felt calm

I felt quiet, healed by this balm

I see a light, far away its brilliance

Rejuvenation from its radiance

I felt all my pain washed away

As death gnawed at my very being

Part of me wanted to stay

But this peace is much to my liking

At last I feel not, the pain from my family

At last I know not, the betrayal from my friends

Alas, its not there, the love that I lost

Everything is starting to mend…

I closed my eyes, for I no longer am here

For this new feeling I am about to endear

Death is the cure from my past longing

Its acceptance I am now encountering

I want to live… but live this way…

I want to leave… and leave this day…

Oh my creator, fly me away, far far away from here…]

OOC: For those of us who do not know the delightful form of poetry known as haiku, let me introduce you to it. :D. By the by, this isn't Marak, it's a random Dreadlord.

-------------------------------------------------

A journey begins

To the Ranch it brings me, now

A respite beckons

I walk in, and look!

Grey mist smothers the whole Ranch,

and I am dismayed.

Screams sound throughout

the grey mist of death, swirling

as if to catch me

It pounces, fire shoots

from my hands, burning the mist

as my heart nigh-stops

I grow grim, and halt.

The mist recedes, I live!

Fire tears once more

The red-hot glow burns

the death-mist as it flees

from my new-found wrath

Fire springs from my hand

As soft death strikes from behind

I fall, and cry out

Fire quenched, I fall

Feeling life's vibrancy ebb

My spirit shatters

There is nothing left

My life taken by revenge

I sink into death...

There is quietness

Naught but silence and despair

The Great Lord calls me...
