Working with music

How do you do at work?

Can you turn on music? If so, what kind of music do you listen to ?

Is it easy for you to work with music in the background ?

My colleagues in the room next to mine listen to the radio (I don't like the channel, it's very recent pop music lol  and a lot of documentaries about anything that's fashionable like losing weight, wearing heels, gardening, .... ).

I can turn on the music on my side : that way I don't hear the radio and they don't hear my sound hehehe which is probably for the best. Problem is, I  am not alone in my room. The person at the desk next to me is not a fan of heavy metal. So I turn on my music only when he's away from the office.

Depending on what I have to do, I have to say that music can help me concentrate, especially if I have to fill in sheets in Excel or so.

If I have to memorize something, now, music is more counterproductive XD

What about u ?

I cannot do schoolwork while listening to music because it distracts me. I can do chores such as cleaning while listening. I listen to upbeat music. Disney, country, pop, rock, classical, anything but jazz really.

Yesterday I committed to learning to play the bagpipes.

I love to listen to music when I read... There are songs that I can listen to and still remember parts of books I read when listening to them. But it has to be something that I don't want to sing along to. Because I can't read and sing at the same time lol

I love music! If I'm working (housework, mowing lawn, etc.) it helps motivate me. If I'm studying or doing homework, I'm one of those people that must have peace and quiet. If music is playing, I'm singing or humming and thus distracted from my studies.

Music always helps me work, but it has to be the right sort.  Anything overly catchy can be a distraction.  I use it to set a mood for concentration.  That usually means a big fuzzy repetitive wall of sound in the form of black metal or post-rock.  Game soundtracks and vaporwave enter my work mix a lot too.  If I'm reading a book, I aim for something theme-appropriate.  I have a big compilation of Chinese classical music that got a lot of play time while I was studying Chinese history in college.  Fantasy and nature-themed music tends to enhance books like WoT for me.  Catchier stuff comes up if I'm trying to engage a lot of people at once or work around the house and want to keep a positive attitude.  Generally my instinct is always to put on something that corresponds with what I'm trying to do.

Chinese classical movies, it sounds like something interesting. I'll probably have a try at it... it makes me feel curious

What about driving?

Are there music genres that make you want to speed up? Or to take more time on the road?

I don't like to drive,  so if I have to drive I prefer to have no background noises lol

It's an 8 disc compilation that must be fairly obscure, because the majority of it isn't uploaded to youtube.  Majestic stuff though:

As for when I'm driving, (This is Murica.  Going to the grocery store entails an hour in the car.)  that's the one venue where rock still enters my mix a fair bit.  I listen to a lot of Rage Against the Machine on the road.  Krallice still gets into my mix for any venue, because it's intense if you pay attention to it but atmospheric if you zone out of it.  I've started gathering a decent collection of hip-hop albums for the road too.  But if I want to be especially irresponsible behind the wheel of a car, stoner rock.  Always, stoner rock.  o_o;

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi, haven't been around here in ages. Name's Zep. Used to be an archer. Nice to meet y'all.

As to music and work, I can live without it but I prefer not to. For my day job I'm a roofer, and nothing helps me carry 4 X 8 sheets of roof board across the roof repeatedly like some good ol fashioned Pantera, Megadeth, and Slayer.
