They hadn't even given the circuit judge time to move on to the next town before there was another murder, and another circus that pretended to be a trial. The accused wasn't even in the courtroom to begin the day, they'd appointed a bailiff to hunt down the purported outlaw and drag her out of bed to the courtroom.

 

The trial itself was rushed, as the prosecutors and jurors alike appeared to be focused on ending the day before the boarding house served supper.

 

When Doc Cassiday finally took the witness stand, she insisted she was innocent of all charges. "Why, I tried to protect those witnesses myself," she claimed. She laid out her defense in detail with names and dates, enough to cause the judge's head to swim. Or perhaps it was the hunger. He could use a chili dog right about now.

 

"Lies!" Darthe Wade stood with a shout. "She wasn't protecting the witness two nights ago, Your Honor. I stopped her from leaving her house that night myself." There was a buzz in the courtroom. Voices raised in support of the cowboy, while others shouted that they believed the doctor.

 

In the midst of the kerfuffle, a tall woman stood, drawing all eyes to her. "They're both lying, Your Honor. Cassiday did leave her house that night, and I followed her. But she did not visit the witness at all."

 

You could hear a pin drop in the silence that followed. Then the courtroom exploded with sound.

 

In the confusion, the accused attempted to slip away. She made it out the door and onto the back of a white horse, but the beast had belonged to the Lone Stranger, and wouldn't be fooled. She was thrown from his back into the waiting arms of the bailiff, who led her away.

 

Doc Cassiday, Mafia Lawyer, has been lynched.
