On October 27, Book 12 of The Wheel of Time, THE GATHERING STORM, goes on sale nationally. Completed by Brandon Sanderson from notes and partials left by Robert Jordan, it is very good. I was its editor, as I was editor on ALL the Wheel books, and Maria Simons, Jordan’s right hand for over 12 years, and Alan Romanczuk, Jordan’s left hand (just because you can’t have two right hands unless you are … Shiva, is it?) have worked very closely with Brandon as well. We three — Harriet, Maria, and Alan — have really worked as Team Jordan on this book, and will do so on the following two, which will complete the Wheel. Book 13 will be titled TOWERS OF MIDNIGHT, and Book 14 will be A MEMORY OF LIGHT.

Even Jordan couldn’t have written everything he left in one volume, although he thought he could. But you recall that he thought he could write the entire Wheel in six volumes.

Try THE GATHERING STORM. I think you’ll like it a lot. I do.

Best,
Harriet McDougal

Update: Some additional comments from Wilson:

I was a Jordan fan before he was Jordan. The Warrior God was my childhood idol, the big brother I didn’t have. Love is too weak a word to describe my feelings for Jim. I would do anything for him and would defend him with my life. That includes defending his work. Saying that, I could not be more pleased with the work done by Team Jordan: Harriet, Brandon, Maria and Alan. The Gathering Storm masterfully continues Jim’s story in a manner that would be pleasing to the creator himself. There are countless “oh my!” moments. The pace is staggering. I fear that there will be many WOT fans who will loose sleep on the 27th because they just won’t be able to find a stopping point.

I said before on this blog, that I loved Jim for bringing Harriet into my life. A grander lady there is not. Still what she has done in orchestrating and beautifully completing Jim’s work has raised her stock even more. Love you sis. The Warrior Angel is surely smiling.

Congratulations to Team Jordan. Can’t wait till next year.

I think it shows loyalty from Sanderson, as well of Jim’s (Robert’s) family and friends to the entire WoT community that they’ve risked so much of themselves to satisfy our cravings. Kudos to them and to all who keep the realm of Jim Rigney alive in their hearts.

Unfortunately Tor has decided to continue the “let’s stretch this out for all the money we can get” game as they did in Mr. Jordan’s fantastic epic. As the last three of Mr. Jordan’s books became more about describing the wardrobes of the characters than the pith of the adventure, it would appear that they plan to continue the same B.S. with Mr Sanderson as their lackey. Too bad!

I wonder how books they would have made out of Lord of the Rings?

There were places that didn’t work very well. I don’t think Brandon Sanderson is really up to the task, but not many fantasy writers — hardly any — are capable writers. Sanderson overuses pronouns, and does not have Rigney’s descriptive powers. Mat & Perrin’s stories seem to suffer the most from this unevenness. However, on the whole the book was excellent. It had enough of Rigney in it to satisfy most Wheel fans, and I suspect the next two books in the series will be of a similar nature.

Honestly, thank you for putting the final push behind this spin of the Wheel. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Thoroughly enjoyable, gripping and satisfying. It actually felt good to see plots resolve and the story moving forward in a monumental pace.

Please oh please, don’t take 10 years to put the next one out.

I just finished last night. The book was fantastic. There were no points where I felt “this is not how Jordan would have written it”. The team did a great job. If I didn’t know of his death, I would have thought he wrote the book. Thank you for finishing and being true to the story.

I cant wait for the next two.

I was very saddened at the death of Robert Jordan and so hoped that someone would be willing to take on the task to finish the Wheel of Time. I love these books so much and am so happy that there is, yet, another book out and two more to follow. I know that Mr. Sanderson had a very large task at hand. I haven’t been able to pick up the book, but will soon and can’t wait to read it and immerse myself back into the Wheel Of Time world!

Just finished the volume. Sanderson unfortunatley had to fill shoes that were unfillable, yet he did a commendable job. Subtle differences in style do not deter from the strongness and passion of this writing, this book was phenominal and I cannot fathom waiting another year The Midnight Towers.

Please accept mine and I’m sure everyone else’s heart felt thanks Brandon.

    Well done.

Thank you so much for this book. I can’t help but think that Jordan would be pleased. I felt the characters acted like they always have—and the twists! The reveals! I read it today in a 7 hour marathon…and I want to read it again already! Thank you thank you thank you!
