VA DENIES HYPERTENSION CLAIMS LINKED TO HERBICIDES

“…[Veterans Affairs Secretary] James Peake agreed to allow AL amyloidosis… as a service-connected illness related to herbicide exposure, Brown [Mark Brown, director of VA's Environmental Agents Service]said.

“…AL amyloidosis was added to the list [of service-connected illnesses] because it was very similar to a type of cancer linked to herbicide exposure and “it made sense to make a service connection”, Brown said.

“In the past, it has taken about six months between approval of a new illness for service-connected status and new regulations being issued that allow claims to be processed, he said.”

My dad just lost his battle with AL Amyloidosis. He did serve in the Vietnam War, but was stationed in Korea. I am at a loss of words that while he was in Korea ready to serve our Country, he may have been exposed to agent orange. On the flip side, I am glad that the VA is recognizing Amyloidosis, I just hope that the family of service men do not have to fight with the VA to receive benefits. This will not justify the loss of a loved one, but offer minor redemption.

A final ruling was made May 8, 2009 by the government that links AL Amyloidosis with service in Vietnam. For more information go to: http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/E9-10627.htm
My husband is in recovery from AL Amyloidosis and served in the Vietnam war. I only found this document when I was researching his disease. His kidneys are declining and will require a transplant. The fight goes on…

I am, at times, slow to catch up with the real world….So it was a shock to discover James Rigney, aka, Robert Jordan had passed away. It was an even deeper and most fearful shock as to the cause.
I am a Vietnam Combat Vet who has some A.O. problems. Luckier than most. Less severe. It is such a sadness that we, service members, have been the experimental targets of our own Government. There is a site called silverrose.org. It was established by Gary Chenett. He is the National Director. He can also be reached at fuzzyfron@intouchmi.com. It is worth the time to visit. It is most tragic that we have lost another brother. A Government with too many secrets is not “Of the people-for the people not by the people.” My heart…My soul…bleeds for all in service to America, no matter the instrument of their demise. Sincerely.///NICK

    Hello,
My husband was a Viet Nam Vet also, he died from al- amyloidosis, it first hit his kidneys, my daughter gave him one, he was doing fine, but the disease hit his liver and he died only two months after it affected his liver. The VA has all this info, I had a meeting with a rep from Washington, the first thing I was told ” You cannot mention amyl at all, since the VA does not recognize it as Agent orange related, that was over a year ago still haven’t heard a word from them yet. To say it’s a disgrace and a shame is an understatement.
