The prologue of Knife of Dreams discussion is by Andrew, Virginia, and Spencer is continued. Part two of two. We are going to try and get through a recap of the entire book before The Gathering Storm is released, so we will all be up to speed for it.

As always, during our discussions we go into all the books of the Wheel of Time series, from the prequel New Spring through Knife of Dreams, so if you haven’t finished your first read-through, you may want to come back to these podcasts when you have, as THERE WILL BE SPOILERS.

The team again sends thanks to Spencer for a job well done. He not only contributes his talents to the discussion, but is one of the super editing team we have now.

  • The notes that we used in the discussion have been posted on the forums, here: http://forums.dragonmount.com/index.php/topic,48622.msg1309619.html#msg1309619

Of course, we only used them as a general outline.

  • LOL The message cow!

  • Just a quick point about the taint of Shadar Logoth, RJ said it does not spread between people only from the dagger Fain has. From DragonCon 2005, Please follow this youtube link

  • Awesome podcast guys! I asked for more and you delivered. You keep putting them out and I promise to keep listening and commenting.

    Landshark.

  • The Nine Rods of Dominion are not objects but people. They were leaders of the nations of the AoL and when it says that Lews Therin summoned them it means that LTT was the most powerful man in the world. RJ said so.

  • I hadn’t thought of the raven from Egwene’s dream representing Mat as Prince of the Ravens, as opposed to the Seanchan only. It certainly does make for an interesting theory. It actually makes more sense after thinking about it that Mat would come to the White Tower in passing as it were. He would likely be on his way to somewhere else, like where he thinks he needs to be for Tarmon Gaidon. If the raven represents the Seanchan it doesn’t make as much sense that they would attack the Tower in passing since that kind of seems like their endgame as opposed to a target they strike quickly and move on from… either way I think the fact that Egwene sees the Raven moving on without destroying the Tower is key and could very well mean the Raven is Mat, not the Ever Victorious Army.

  • Just my thoughts on the chair of pardon…Making that person who serves here share the consequences of the verdict with the accused would serve the purpose of making sure that the accused’s “defense attourney” would put every effort into proving the innocence(sp?) of the accused. I haven’t heard that the concept of innocent until proven guilty applies anywhere in randland, aside from Ebou Dari women killing their husbands. This would also help prevent mock justice where the verdict was a forgone conclusion and the chair of pardon was just another hanging judge.

  • BTW, awesome podcast, been listening and you guys are great. Awesome site, too.

  • Two weeks to do podcasts on the rest of the book!

  • you guys better hurry up if you wanna do the entire book unless u plan to do large chunks

  • Malcolm is correct.
I remember a section on the old wotmania website where RJ said the Nine Rods of Dominion were people. The oath rods were called binders in the AOL.

The podcasts are great. Keep up the good work.

  • I was think about Egwene’s dreams in relationship to the Seanchan. I thought there was a dream where she was rescued or saved by a woman that appeared to be Seanchan. I went looking on the Encyclopaedia WOT site, but could not find it. Am I wrong or was there another dream that suggested that a Seanchan was going to provide critical aid to Egwene?

  • I found it.

    CoT,Ch20

    * Egwene walks a ledge on a cliff. The ledge collapses leaving her hanging by her fingertips. A Seanchan woman climbs down the cliff and offers to help.
    * Atop a mountain sits a white plinth with a glass oil lantern on top. Two ravens fly by and set the lamp tottering.

  • It would seem to me that Darkfriends are relatively rare among the Seanchan in general for two reasons. Distance from Shayol Ghul and irrelevance to the main continent over the last 3,000 years, and more importantly, it’s such a stratified society that the millenial promises of the Dark One don’t appeal. Can you see Surouth obeying a beggar who made the right signs like a Black Ajah sister or Westland noble would? No, I can’t see it. Seanchan society just isn’t conducive to a cult that crosses social lines.

Channeling doesn’t protect them. Back in the War of Shadow 1/2 of the Aes Sedai were Darkfriends.

Moraine wanted to bring the Horn to Illian to make Rand King and then march on Tear. It’s unclear how much prophecy references the Horn if any.

I think Javindhra and Duhara are both Black Ajah.

The Aiel traditionally drink after battle, the Shadio are drinking all day long.

It’s just the Borderlands or the Two Rivers. In Altara a woman killing a man is justified unless proven otherwise.

The Chair of Pardon things goes back I think to the sponsers neccessary for a sister to be raised to Amyrlin. I’m sure that normally those sponsers would be the only ones assigned to the Chair of Pardon who could face the same punishment.

  • RJ said that Fain can’t pass on the taint of Aridhol unless he has the dagger on him, and as soon as he got the dagger he left the city. He just made Elaida a bit more suspicious.

While, Mat’s Ta’veren so he’d mess things up, but I’m pretty sure it’s the Seanchan.

The three ripples is probably the last 3 seals breaking.

  • I don’t remember the 3 ripples, but if they are the seals breaking then it is much more likely that it will be Mat since he will need the Horn for the Last Battle. Also, he would likely leave the tower as soon as possible, unlike the Seanchan, thus the raven continuing to fly.

  • In regards to the ravens hitting the lamp and moving on, I think Mat is the most likely option especially since as the ‘Prince of Ravens’ he will likely be escorted by at lease some Seanchan, hence the Seanchan woman helping Egwene on dragonmount as per her dream. Also Mat going to the white tower could be a good suggestion of the ‘surprise destination’ that is mentioned in the book review, as he is largely suggested as going to the tower of Genji in KoD.

Also any chance of a podcast on the prologue or first chapter of TGS? as I lacked the selfcontrol to avoid them both during the tantalizing wait.

Really enjoying the podcasts, its great to get new perspectives and theories on various areas of the books.

  • Matt does have Egeanin with him. She might be the best choice of Seanchan woman to help Egwene. I like her better than Tuon. Egeanin has worked with Elayne and Nynaeve, and has a larger view of the channelers than most other Seanchan.

  • Hey all-

Just an update. The rest of our recap series has been recorded and the episodes are in serious edit. With the Dark One’s own luck, you’ll be getting those episodes in the next 2 days or so. If not, then we’ll put them out there as soon after the release of TGS as is humanly possible.

    Suravye ninto manshima taishite,

    Andrew Gelos

  • I get the TGS in 7 hours :)
Just thought that was worth mention hehe
