Virginia, Andrew G, Jessie and Marc discuss which nations are likely to survive Tarmon Gai’don and why we think they will survive – or why we think they won’t. This is part one of a series – part two will deal with the various channelers on the Wheel of Time lands. As always, during our discussions we go into all the books of the Wheel of Time series, from the prequel New Spring through Knife of Dreams, so if you haven’t finished your first read-through, you may want to come back to these podcasts when you have, as THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. The team sends many thanks to Spencer, one of the fantastic editing team we have now, for a job well done. Listen Now:

so many episodes all at once! its like Bel Tine!
this was a nice episode.
im looking forward to the next one. looks like its gonna rock!!
BTW… lol Matt
Heh heh – well, it will be Bel Tine for a few more weeks at least. There are two more episodes ready to post and more on the way. Yay, Editors!
This may not be the place to post this but what the hell! Does anyone here play LOTRO and what are your game names? I’d like to get in touch with a few dedicated WoT fans but I’m Irish so none of my friends even know what WoT is and there’s something more personal about chatting on games rather than forums.
Why isn’t this on iTunes yet and can I download this straight to my iPod?
Hi Ingtar! I’ve not played LOTRO. Maybe I should check it out. I play on Evony sometimes.
Terror, yes, you can load it on your iPod, I do all the time. It should show up on iTunes soon.
Some kind of glitch at 5:49, two voices at once.
Perrin didn’t promise Manetheren to the Seanchan, he said he would relinquish all claim of restoring Manetheren if they help him against the Shaido. That doesn’t mean he’s going to give them Ghealdan or the Two Rivers and the rest of western Andor.
Manethern wasn’t actually that big. It ruled Andor west of white bridge, Gheldan and northwestern Altara. It’s famous because of the courage and bravery it’s men showed during the Trolloc Wars.
If Elayne dies I think Galad will inherit Cairhein, as son of Taringail. However, I don’t think she will die and Cairhein will be annexed by Andor. There needs to be a counterbalance to the Seanchan Empire in the southeast and a kingdom of Andor & Cairhein would be powerful.
I think Arad Doman will be absorbed by Saldea in the end.
I think the Shaido are going to unfortunately run across a Trolloc army on their way home and get completely annihilated.
ok i agree with charlz guyben i just looked it up and on page 158 of the knife of dreams he says “To free her (faile), i’ll guive up any claim to reviving manatheren sign any sort of oath on it you want.” meaning he doesn’t offer to give the seanchan the lands.
As to anyone from the end of the podcast there’s no way galad can be he who comes with the dawn because he must be born of the blood, and raised by the old blood. which andors people in respect to even the youngest of countries arn’t really old in any form and he is not off the blood of the aiel in any form shape or kind.
lastly Elayne can’t die because the three of rand’s girl-friends, women whatever you want to call them have to stand around rand’s funeral pire according to Min’s vision in the eye of the world.
lastly i agree with whomever said that perrin would end up being the king of saldea he and faile have at many points in this story been brought into the situations where it was hinted that instead of them settling down outside of saldea they would end up back there. also in book 8 in the prologue they mention that if faile’s father and the queen of saldea die faile is the next in line for the throne easy enough that is either going to happen to be hinted at in the future if not they will retire back to two rivers and live a quite life though knowing how robert jordan is and believe on of min’s viewings i believe that perrin will end up with a crown at some point in his life.
thank you for allowing me the voice my opinion maybe i’ll bring back more here shortly
Yeah keep the episodes comming!!! Oh and Virginia congrats for you winning that fantastic prize. So jealous….

I think Mat should restore Manetheren. He’s so much cooler and a better leader than Perrin.
I think after the last battle, the world will be in shambles and people will realize this and be more willing to forge something workable out of the chaos. Here are my thoughts on the shape of the 4th age world assuming the geography is more or less as it is pre last battle.
A fragment of the Children of the Light will survive the last battle. Galad always does the right thing and I think the right thing for him will be to serve the light without political ambition. I can see him turning the children into a sort of United Nations, wanting no political influence, but willing to bring peace wherever they are needed. I can see the new Children mediating disputes and so on. If he hooks up with Berelain, as seems likely, she will be in a position to aid him because she will be respected by the Seanchan because she is of the blood big time. I can see Mayene becoming a sort of open territory where peace treaties are signed and perhaps even war crimes are tried etc., much like the United Nations. Mayene has its own source of wealth so it can fund itself. The Children can thereby actually serve the light instead of their institution.
The Seanchan will be weakened in Randland because of their fight against the tower, their fight against the shadow, and because of the fact they probably will not be able to collar women any longer. One accommodation with the Seanchan is perhaps a sort of King of Kings arrangement where the Empress is the High King of Randland, but I don’t know if I should go that far. The Seanchan control some of the coast, and Perrin gave them the Two Rivers area. This will create some friction between Andor and the Seanchan because both claim it. But Tuon has problems of her own and needs to rebuild the shattered empire across the sea. So most likely, the Seanchan will either be broken altogether, or rule what they do now through vassal kings like Perrin.
Alliandre was loyal to Perrin and the Dragon so some form of Ghealdan should survive and Alliandre will serve as a vassal to Perrin.
I imagine Andor will survive in some form and probably take over Cairhien and Cairhien will become a center of learning. The other big nations will either survive or meld into something else but I do think after the last battle, assuming the Dark One is subdued, peace will break out so some cohesive nation will form out of that. Perhaps Rand’s territories will turn into some sort of republic or a King of Kings structure.
The Blight should disappear and what’s left of the Borderlands will flourish but I think things will be more or less as is with Lan reassuming kingship over his rightful territory. Without the Shadow to fight, things may change but I think that will be the initial setup.
This leaves the magic users. I tend to think the One Power is a kind of energy source. It is to WoT what oil is to us. It’s running out. When the 4th Age starts it will still be there so the magic users will be some sort of force and one would assume a united one. But their power will lessen as time passes while technology will increase. As time passes they will not be able to lord it over anyone any longer. After all, once someone in Cairhien invents the electric lightbulb, you won’t need anyone to channel the torches to life.
But as to what shape the New Tower will assume I have no idea. As to what happens to Rand, I have no idea. Perhaps the surviving Aiel will serve once more but that too is up in the air. The most likely scenario is the Aiel will return home and a nation will form from that huge lake Rand created in TSR.
After long ages of the One Power being renewed, the source will replenish itself until it is once again discovered probably in the next Second Age.
It was mentioned in the Previous Podcast that there is an interview with the readers of the WoT audible books available at this site….where would I find it?
You guys rock! Just curious, do you plan on putting up a podcast where you discuss the Prologue and the first Chapter of TGS? Preferably before the book actually comes out? That would be awesome!
There is TONS to discuss from just those two chapters alone.
Thanks guys!
Ok for Marc a few small points.
First for the comment about Perrin giving the seanchan anything that’s wrong he nearly told them he would give up any claim on reforming manentherin not that he would give up the lands that were once manentherin for one thing it would be impossible to give what in his mind wasn’t his.
Next as for your comments on the one power it would be impossible for it to vanish from the world without in turn distroying the work or time itself which is what the dark one is trying to do so in counter to what u said I believe the ability to channel will be strenghtend after the defeat of the dark one because what has been weakens so I believe to be an attempt by the dark one to control the world as he can around shayal gul. He has infused this ability into his hand the mydraal with the ability to strip the ability to control the onepower from someone. In this at the weakening wards I believe is the work of the dark one.
Wow, lots of comments since I looked last!
Let’s see, first, in a section which somehow didn’t get to the editors, I mentioned in the podcast that Perrin had only promised Tylee not to REVIVE Manetheren, which everyone thought he was doing riding round with the banner, and we discussed the fact that he never promised them any lands, and indeed, explicitly told her they could not have Ghealdan.
NickOvTyme – there is an interview with Reading and Kramer who read the audio books. I have it, it’s good, and it will go to editing soon. It got bumped back a bit because I have part two of this one to post and we also had and have some time-sensitive ones to do before TGS, like Jason’s review and interview – see next paragraph!
Jemron – Thank you!
I’m not sure we will get to the prologue of TGS before it comes out. We have just finished discussions on the beginning of KoD which we hope to get through before TGS comes out, as a memory refresher for everyone. I have the first one ready to post now.
Xar_81 – Thanks! I was blown away to win that prize! So awesome….
[...] The 4th Age Podcast – Episode 55 – Geopolitical Ramifications of the Last Battle – Nations [...]
It wont let me download it.
Umm…is anyone else having the problem where you can’t listen to the last 4 podcasts because there’s nothing to click on, or is it just something I’m doing?
Jason is looking into it. Might have been broken during he last upgrade of the site. Hang in there – it will be fixed. You can also get them on iTunes, in the meantime.
Ok. Thanks for the quick reply Virginia! You’re my favorite, btw!
Hi all, sorry to be so long away. I was literally away for over a week, and though the hotel had wireless, I could never get connected. I’ve heard T-mobile had an extended outage, so perhaps that was it.
Ian – wow, thanks! *blushes*
I’m pretty sure all the podcast players are fixed now. Apparently that function was broken during the last site upgrade. The perils of modern technology! I just upgraded ny phone and went through a few days of things not working properly – for no apparent reason, yet!
I really want to thank each and every one of you for posting comments, leaving voicemails, and emailing us! We read and listen to everything, and we respond as quickly as we can. Real life sometimes gets in the way of that, sadly, but we really do love to know what you all think and appreciate the input and try to act on it. We have a number of listener feedback podcast in the works, They all got pushed back as we have been trying to a) get as many previously recorded podcasts edited and posted as possible (lest TGS perhaps make them obsolete!) b) get our recap of KoD done before TGS and c) get Jason’s TGS preview interview up for you.
So….you’ll be getting a slew of podcasts in the next weeks, and then we really hope to be able to stay on a regular schedule. I’ve said many times before, we rarely miss a week recording, it’s the editing that takes so much time. Now we have a great team of several dedicated editors who are spending untold hours of their free time to get these done for us. All of our editors have been great – it just happens that sometimes they find that they can’t spend the time at any given pint and have to take a break or quit, due to job or school pressures, and we understand. They are all volunteers, and let’s all take a moment to thank them for their hard work behind the scenes!

4th Age podcaster
There was something that I wanted to touch on about the Seanchan/Mantheren Situation. I truly believe that the Seanchan attacks against this side of the ocean will stop, except for the one on the WT. Mat has bound himself to the righful empress and that is going to end a lot of the problems in and of itself. As far as Mantheren/Two rivers/ goes Perrin did not say he would give up the land, and a.) I don’t think the Seanchan could move the TR folk by force they love Perrin,Faile and home too much…and B). Thats Mat’s home, if there arises an issue of rightful claim, you can put your life savings on the fact that the Empress will gift the area to Mat, and since he will return across the ocean to be with his wife(BC he is above all else honorable), Mat will Make Perrin the Baron/Lord or whatever of the area. No issue will arise that will not just as quickly die away.
Also, In Nynaeve’s ring vision of her life with Lan, the Seven Tower of Malkier were whole and rebuilt sparkling and pristine, the vision was light and happy, the land was teeming with life. The Dark One will be completely gone after the last battle, and the blight will retreat. Lan is going to be marching at the head of at least 10,000 BORDERLANDERS not just Malkeri. Think about how revered Malkier and Lan are in this area of the world. Just Nynaeve’s mention of Lan’s marching in the pub was enough to make those not only of Malkier blood but also others weep and take notice. Lan will have a force large enough and motivated enough to take apart the WT if he wanted to. Plus Lan made a promise to return to Nynaeve…this is the one part of the series that i am most forward to seeing the resolution to…other than Perrin, Lan is my favorite character in the series.
Perrint did NOT promise Manethren to the Seanchan! What he did was give up his claim to re-build the old kingdom (and all the trouble that would cause). He was very clear with the Seanchan about how Gheledran is under his protection and they better not try and take it. He would hardly do that if he had promised it to the Seanchan!
The 4th ages of Randland and Middle Earth will merge and become their cumulative future age yet to come.
I always wondered why both tales take place in the 3rd age of their times. Maybe RJ wanted to meld his work with Tolkien’s. Aragorn will be king of the world while the Two Rivers and the Shire slip back into relative obscurity simultaneously. Rand and his harem will procreate forever while Lan and Nynaeve rebuild/repopulate Malkier, Perrin and his ball and chain can lord/lady over whatever, Mat conquers Seanchan and Egwene begins her icy rule as Amyrlin Seat.
And they’ll all live happily ever after.
