Virginia, Andrew G and Amir discuss Dragonmount founder and host Jason Denzel’s recent review of The Gathering Storm. Jason was indeed blessed by the Light – Brandon and Harriet set him up with an official advance reading copy of the book! We forgot to ask him if it was in the form of a ter’angreal such as Elayne and Nynaeve found in Ebou Dar, but in any case we are all envious in the extreme, to the extent of plotting like a bunch of Forsaken as to how we might relieve him of such a burden. As usual, we range far and wide during the discussion, including an lively debate about Rand’s sword mastery after the events in Knife of Dreams and some genuine silliness at the very end, so please join us for the fun! As always, during our discussions we go into all the books of the Wheel of Time series, from the prequel New Spring through Knife of Dreams, so if you haven’t finished your first read-through, you may want to come back to these podcasts when you have, as THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. The team sends a big thank you to editor David who who finished this one up so quickly and well! Our editors are the unsung heroes behind the podcast making, and we are beyond grateful for all the hours they put in behind the scenes. Jason’s complete review, as well as a great deal of other news, can be found at http://www.dragonmount.com/News/ Listen Now:

Well, you may be wondering why there are TWO podcasts posted on the same day! It’s a first!
We moved these recently recorded ones up so that they would be more timely. They were done being edited on the same day (thank you, David and Spencer!) and they really go together as far as subject matter. I suggest that you download both and then listen to them one ofter the other, if you can.
We are making every effort to get these published on a more regular basis. We record nearly every week, with few exceptions, but that same old issue of editing is the problem. It’s just a lot of work, and our volunteer editors only have so many hours to devote to these things. It’s just…time-consuming.
So bear with us if you can, and thanks for listening! This same comment is posted on Episode 54 as well.

I’m also sceptical about it being just two years between TEotW and KoD. I remember Egwene saying something about how old they were when starting out at this journey, and I remember that being more than two years.
Oh, I just listened to the other podcast and I must admit that I fail completely.
What do you mean, you fail completely, Henrik? I’m confused….
Oh, Virginia; because I thought it was like 10 years between TEotW and KoD. I suspect the major character development (and Rand sounding like a grumpy old man) might have something to do with that assumption.
Well, it certainly seems like ten years! Even if it were, Rand would still only be in his late 20′s, though – hardly an old man! Though he certainly is getting grumpy. Anyone would after everything he’s been though! It isn’t all cakes and ale being ta’veren!
I’m a WoT fan and I’m OK
I read all night and I read all day
and all night, and all day, and all night….
Thanks to the editor for leaving in all those clips at the end. That was a great giggle!!
Good podcast and I am also jealous! Virginia, abridged books were invented by the Dark One himself probably shortly after the Trolloc wars. But there is no doubt they are evil. I’m pretty sure there are Myrddral driving pulbishers who are so glazed over with fear, they abridge books so they can get away from these shadowspawn as soon as possible. Frankly, that is the only explanation I have for abridged books.
Kim, that was a great giggle to me as well when I heard it! I nearly fell down, dropped the hose I was using to water plants! We really need to be more careful what we say while recording….
The silly song just popped out – I sing that to my Smooth Fox Terriers sometimes when they are being silly – they really do jump all over and they DON’T care – lol! Leave it to Andrew to know ALL the words to it, though! He’s got even more trivia rattling around in his head than I do!
Virginia
Clearly, that is the missing explanation for the existence of abridged books, Marc! Thanks!
I think the shocking thing with Rand is that he will kill Cadsuane after she pushes him over the edge, this will enable Rand to see just how bad his mental state is and fullfill the prophecy (you know the one).
I have a 10 cassette collection of the “Best of Robert Jordan”. “Over 15 Hours of Listening” to The Shadow Rising,, The Fires of Heaven, Lord of Chaos, and A Crown of Swords. I picked it up second hand for just a few bucks and I haven’t listened to them yet, but I have to imagine that these are abridged versions (even though I cannot find that in the text on the box.)
Nonad, they are definitely abridged! The unabridged books take many CDs each. I have them all.
Sorry – NOMAD – I can’t type some days….
[...] The 4th Age Podcast – Episode 53 – The Gathering Storm Review [...]
I too love the goofiness at the end of the episode – thanks for leaving that stuff in!
Just out of curiousity, am I the only one who is not going to read the first chapter even though it is available? I’m waiting until I have the entire book before reading ANYTHING.
That was probably a good choice Heather, but I couldn’t help myself. Now I have been left with a tease of the book that is just making the waiting that much more difficult. That being said, I am also likely to purchase the prologue before the full release as well, so I guess I’m just a glutton for punishment…
I secoind David on this issue. I am about a quarter of the way on my re-read of the series, but I read the first chapter for TGS the other day, and teased myself as well. And I’ll probably be buying the prolouge when it comes out as well.
Amir.
That’s me as well, David and Amir. There is no WAY I would have to self-restraint to NOT read Chapter one the instant it was available. Heather, you must have more will-power than a Tovan Councilor.
I’m getting the prologue on the instant as well.Chapter One went way too fast – the Prologues usually have a lot of meat to them. CAN’T WAIT.
I can’t wait for TGS, either. can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait augh…..
I’m looking around for a Portal Stone nearby to jump forward to October 27th.
LoL for the ending
A minor point during this podcast, but one I had a strong reaction to. There has been at least one audiobook abridgement done. I had the misfortune of listening to it, as it was all that was available at the library. It was AWFUL! I had read the book many times by this point, and I had a problem telling what the heck was going on. There were no chapter demarcations, no indication of when we switched points of view, no setting descriptions, no tone was set, it was just awful. I will NEVER listen to another abridgement, Wheel of Time or otherwise.
Hey all…As for who is the 3rd member besides Mat & Tom going to save Moiraine, it will be Jain Farstrider…As for the profound thing w/ Rand…Maybe him kneeling to the Crystal Throne?
As for Egwene’s surprise? I dunno maybe she decides to want to still Rand?
Just some thoughts
Rand is most def right handed.
“Rand hastily finished hanging his things from his shoulders, holding them all awkwardly behind him
with his left hand so he could reach his sword.”
The Eye of the World, chapter 32, “Four Kings in Shadow”
There are abridged audio tapes out there– The reader was actor Mark Rolston.
http://www.amazon.com/Eye-World-Wheel-Time-Book/dp/1879371529/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259583999&sr=1-1 is the direct link to the Amazon page. I owned the first two novels in abridged form.
The Eye of the world is condensed down to two full cassette tapes. It is a total of 3 hours long!
Mark Rolston used to be the sole voice of the Audiobooks. He was really quite good. Unabridged versions of the Mark Rolston’s reads are also out there apparently.
What won’t you hear? Details, details, details…
Jordan’s rich world building and lengthy inner monologues have been trimmed out of the tale. Some scenes have been cut down or removed entirely.
Peace favor your sword.
