As with the previous covers that were released for the ebooks, Tor Art Director Irene Gallo has done a write up about the process behind creating this image. Be sure to check out the full article. Here’s an excerpt:

With Crossroads, we wanted to show Perrin at his breaking point. After engaging in a despicable act he, in a fit of justifiable rage, finally chooses to throw away his axe of war. The trick was getting the moment right. Attempts to show the action came across a bit cartoony. Instead, we decided to depict the minutes just after. The point was to show what Perrin, in this character-defining moment, was leaving behind.

James Luckman, part of the Dragonmount staff, was fortunate enough to interview Harriet McDougal this week. The interview has been posted on the Dragonmount forums for you to read. In it, she discusses her relationship with the late Robert Jordan, what’s it like working with Brandon Sanderson and why peaches are poisonous in the Wheel of Time universe. She even manages to sneak in a RAFO for us.

Back in March, James also interviewd Maria Simons, who is the continuity editor for the series. You can read that interview here.

Tor Books has announced that the release date for TOWERS OF MIDNIGHT has been pushed back by a few days. The new release date is November 2nd. The reason for this change is in order to give Brandon just a little more time to wrap things up on the book.

Towers of Midnight

After Brandon’s deadline, there will be an intense push to get the book copyedited, designed, and printed. Normally this process can take many months, but for this book (and most of the more recent WoT novels), the process has been prioritized in order to get the book out as quickly as possible.

I wanted to see Rand again, it had been a while since he made an appearance on the ebook covers and we had yet to see him in full hero mode. On the other hand, I knew it would be impossible to portray that much power without it becoming a caricature. In the end I asked Scott if he could help us out with the cover knowing he could create a fantastic character study of Rand, one that fans would immediately connect with their knowledge of the story and newcomers would see simply as the heroic-but-tested noble lead.

Every now and then some non-Wheel of Time news comes along that we feel is worthy of sharing with everyone. In this case, Tor Books has released the first-ever sneak peek at THE WAY OF KINGS, the first novel in Brandon Sanderson’s ambitious and powerful STORMLIGHT ARCHIVES series. This is the first of ten projected novels.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

If you’ve been following Brandon’s blog or his twitter account, you know there’s already quite a lot of buzz surrounding this novel. Here’s what Tor has to say about it:

Here is a world with historical depths to rival Tolkien, a deep and compelling cast of characters to rival Jordan, and a complex and involving story with all the head-spinning twists and surprises the young fantasy master has become known for. Sanderson’s unique gifts for imaginative landscapes and distinctive systems of magic and technology have never been more apparent. The Way of Kings is an ambitious and immersive first novel in a series that could ultimately redefine the fantasy landscape.

Available right now on Tor.com are the first five — yes, FIVE! — chapters of the novel: the prelude, the prologue, and the first three chapters.

If you love the Wheel of Time, then check out these opening chapters to what’s being billed as the spiritual successor to Robert Jordan’s masterpiece.

The book is available for pre-order from a number of vendors, including Amazon.com. Orders made through this link help support Dragonmount.

We received information today from TarValon.net founder Melissa Craib-Dombroski regarding their annual Robert Jordan Memorial Scholarship award. Here’s what Melissa had to say:

While this has been a community-specific scholarship in the past, it is now open to all undergraduate students attending an accredited university; they do NOT have to be members of TarValon.Net. The recipient is chosen based on their essay only (topic: “How I plan to use my studies to become a Servant of All”). The award this year is $500.

TarValon.net

This is a fantastic opportunity for college students to receive benefit from the hard work and donations of other Wheel of Time fans. For more details, please visit TarValon.net’s info page.

Tor Books has announced that October 26, 2010 will be the release date for Towers of Midnight, the penultimate 13th novel in the Wheel of Time series.

In addition, here’s the dust jacket description of the book’s plot. Spoilers!

The Last Battle has started. The seals on the Dark One’s prison are crumbling. The Pattern itself is unraveling, and the armies of the Shadow have begun to boil out of the Blight.

The sun has begun to set upon the Third Age.

Perrin Aybara is now hunted by specters from his past: Whitecloaks, a slayer of wolves, and the responsibilities of leadership. All the while, an unseen foe is slowly pulling a noose tight around his neck. To prevail, he must seek answers in Tel’aran’rhiod and find a way–at long last–to master the wolf within him or lose himself to it forever.

Meanwhile, Matrim Cauthon prepares for the most difficult challenge of his life. The creatures beyond the stone gateways–the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn–have confused him, taunted him, and left him hanged, his memory stuffed with bits and pieces of other men’s lives. He had hoped that his last confrontation with them would be the end of it, but the Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills. The time is coming when he will again have to dance with the Snakes and the Foxes, playing a game that cannot be won. The Tower of Ghenjei awaits, and its secrets will reveal the fate of a friend long lost.

This penultimate novel of Robert Jordan’s #1 New York Times bestselling series–the second of three based on materials he left behind when he died in 2007–brings dramatic and compelling developments to many threads in the Pattern. The end draws near.

Dovie’andi se tovya sagain. It’s time to toss the dice.

Towers of Midnight

(Note: The U.S. book cover shown here is a temporary mock-up. It is NOT the final version of the cover.)

Thanks to A dribble of Ink for sharing the early peek at the U.S book cover.

As with the previous covers that were released for the ebooks, Tor Art Director Irene Gallo has done a write up about the process behind creating this image. Be sure to check out the full article. Here’s an excerpt:

Still, some hard decisions had to be made. The scenes includes thirteen women working together. If we did a long shot, we could include all thirteen but, then we loose the ability to engage with specific characters. When you add in the thumbnail-size that ebook covers are often first viewed at, I thought it best to focus on a few of the key characters — Elayne, Aviendha, and Nynaeve.
