Tor Books has sent us the exclusive first look at the cover for THE GATHERING STORM, book 12 of the Wheel of Time series. The cover art was painted by artist Darryl K. Sweet, who has done the covers for all of the other US WoT novels. What do you think? (Respectful) comments welcome. More Info |

After i Read the just released fist chapter of The Gathering Storm and read some reactions it came to my mind that the hole is maybe made by Semirhage when escaping and she probably killed some of Rand’s friends so that is why he is holding his fist to the sky!
And also the girl is probably Aviendha who just arrived with Rhuarc and the Aiel!

This is awful. Just awful. By far the worst WOT cover yet.

Wow. I’m speechless. When does this guy’s contract run out? I’d say it’s high time to adopt the snake-and-wheel covers for the US. I’ve many a friend who won’t read the series because the covers put them off so badly… I’m almost there. This one is nowhere near as bad as LOC or ACOS, but still, really intolerable for such a mind-blowingly fantastic story.

Not to my liking. Right arm too small, and the rest is also off. Talk to Geoff Taylor instead. He can paint.

As every other cover for this series it sucks. a real shame the best fantasy work I have ever read has the worst cover art. Mr sweet your are highly over paid even if you did this for free I would suggest you take a class in proportions and read the books.

While it is nice to see that a book cover exists, I have to say that I am not a big fan of it, unfortunately. It looks much the same as the other novel covers. The characters appear disproportionate, always. It might just be my personal preference for more detailed art clouding my point of view as well. Still, as the old cliche goes, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” I am far more interested in the story that awaits inside, and eagerly look forward to reading it.

I don’t really care for this cover but like other people that have written in I have no real artistic talent of my own but I have read this series many times over the last ten years and don’t think this cover fits. I would like to see maybe a wounded Rand with Min supporting him and his soldiers gathered around him in front of the wrecked house. But not so close up and with storm clouds and lightning billowing in the distance. That to me would go along with the tone of the story at this point in time better than this cover that I have to agree looks like a romance novel.

It’s bad, but that’s about what we’ve come to expect. At least Darrell K. Sweet’s covers are better than the Brothers Hildebrandt illustrations for Lord of the Rings.

I’m not trying to be offensive here but EVERY time I see an American-release book cover, WoT included, I am so very, very glad that I don’t live there. Every fantasy book cover looks like a romance novel. It’s ridiculous. The original covers that were released in Australia are basically exactly the same – they have the same images but significantly different font for the text. It’s amazing how much of a difference this makes. I actually think I’d be physically unable to pick up a copy with the U.S. cover.
The new covers that have been released in Australia are great. My only gripe is that I now have one style of cover (the original) for the first 9 books (actually for 2 – 9 as I had to buy a new copy of EotW due to it falling apart from over use) and the new cover style for 10 and 11. Not much to gripe about really.
But yeah, as someone else said, for those poor souls who live in the U.S. I would definitely consider trying to order imports.
