Tor Books has released the cover art for the upcoming ebook release of Winter’s Heart, the ninth book in the Wheel of Time series. Each month, beginning this past October, Tor will release the next book in the series in a variety of electronic formats. See below for a full list of links to the released books, as well as a schedule of the upcoming releases. With each eBook, Tor is including brand new artwork for the “cover”. A different artist has been selected for each one, giving the art team at Tor a chance to provide us fans with a variety of styles. This month, the artwork is by Scott Fischer. The ebook will be released on June 22nd. As with the previous covers that were released for the ebooks, Tor Art Director Irene Gallo has done a write up about the process behind creating this image. To each their own, but I just want to put in my vote that this is not my idea of what Rand al’Thor looks like. Rand is far more muscular, supposed to be even more broad-shouldered than Perrin. His clothing is supposed to be immaculately tailored — fit for one who stands above kings. The character’s hair even appears to be dyed.
While Rand is now the Dragon Reborn, he is also a farm-boy who worked the first 18 years of his life in a rugged, deep-woods farm. He is a blade-master who, even without the one power, could defeat dozens of trollocs single-handedly (at least until the loss of his hand).
This does not communicate these characteristics to me. It appears more like what a modern-day fan who wants to dress up like Rand al’Thor might look like. It is cool fan-art, and I can appreciate it as that, but not what I would put on the cover of the book as an official representation of the character.

“To quote “Uh, I’m not sure how the artist could have shown Rand “struggling and straining to wield the OP” without just making him look constipated instead.” Yeah I would have to agree since most of the strain is concentration and I doubt a constipated look would go over too well.”
Remember the flame an the void. Rand al’Thor does not “strain” to channel. I think this is outstanding cover art.

Not a bad picture, but he looks like Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.

Its about time some decent art is on the cover of these books! This looks fantastic – and actually like the character in the books. The books I have are done terribly. GREAT JOB!! Would love to see this guy do the art for all the softback and hardback books! I would definitely upgrade
