Tor Books has released the cover art for the upcoming ebook release of The Path of Daggers, the eighth book in the Wheel of Time series. Each month, beginning this past October, Tor will release the next book in the series in a variety of electronic formats. See below for a full list of links to the released books, as well as a schedule of the upcoming releases.

With each eBook, Tor is including brand new artwork for the “cover”. A different artist has been selected for each one, giving the art team at Tor a chance to provide us fans with a variety of styles.

This month, the artwork is by Julie Bell. The ebook will be released on May 18th.

As with the previous covers that were released for the ebooks, Tor Art Director Irene Gallo has done a write up about the process behind creating this image. Be sure to check out the full article. Here’s an excerpt:

Still, some hard decisions had to be made. The scenes includes thirteen women working together. If we did a long shot, we could include all thirteen but, then we loose the ability to engage with specific characters. When you add in the thumbnail-size that ebook covers are often first viewed at, I thought it best to focus on a few of the key characters — Elayne, Aviendha, and Nynaeve.

Wheel of Time eBook News and release schedule
Tor Books plans to re-release each one of the Wheel of Time novels as ebooks according to the schedule below. Each will have new cover art, specially commissioned for the eBook format. Each will feature a different artist.

So what do you think of this new image? Leave your comments below. Remember, we’ll have a more detailed report on the overall future of the Wheel of Time print-edition covers at a later time.

@Aaron – I completely agree with your statement. The piece, like many others in this eBook series, is good in and of itself but as one of the major complaints with Sweet’s work is that there are big errors in the covers, I have to say that using an artist familiar with the books is an absolute must – especially if Tor is researching other types of coverart.

This style is about my favorite, not quite digital realism, but not quite traditional painting. It’s a nice blend. The ladies are gorgeous and I like the incorporation of the Bowl. I like their expressions, not liking how Saidar looks like smoke from a cauldron (though that makes them look like witches, :) which is ironic) but the colors, costumes, poses, expressions, etc are all excellent. Don’t get the big knife, but my details on the scene may be fuzzy.

    Otherwise, great job Julie!

I have NEVER liked Darrell K. Sweet’s artwork. I’ve loved the series IN SPITE of their having chosen him for the cover art. I welcome this change to the covers of the E-Books, and I hope one day they’ll give someone else a crack atthe cover art for books 1-13. and get someone who can do it justice and get it right. The old artwork looks so dated, not like some midevil dated look, but something of a Nighteen seventyish look to it that I’ve never really liked. To me it’s funny, in an odd sort of way since the books were not written in the 70′s.

Usually the Kindle editions of the Wheel of Time books have been available for pre-order on Amazon about a week before the release (some even more than a week).

But as of today, May 14, the kindle edition of Path of Daggers is not available for pre-order (except maybe a European edition??).

Oddly, Winter’s Heart, Crossroads of Twilight, and Knife of Dreams are now available for pre-order in kindle editions.

    Where is Path of Daggers?

i’m surprised there’s so much confusion about this picture! i got it right off the bat. Left to right Elayne, Aviendha, Nyneave. did the artist confuse us by making the hair colors different? sure! but elayne doesn’t carry a foot and a half long dagger! so some things aren’t exactly perfect, but it’s still a great picture of the girls.

I think that dude Adam on page 5 said it the best…..but I’ll add my 2 cents…..The characters, overall, look perfectly fine. Even gorgeous, I’d say. The details that aren’t correct are definitely outweighed by the ones that are. In regard to the people who read the series and DIDN’T get chosen for this gig because their not artists….I think you should be a little more open-minded towards a piece created by someone who, despite not reading the books (that’s just a guess, but an educated one), depicted a very strong moment for the series (on many levels) quite well. I think, if you stop worrying about the amount of saidar they’re channeling, and just focus on what their thoughts could be at that moment….so introspective, so “in their own little world” type state of mind, you’d realize that Julie Bell got their “inner personas” down to nearly a T. You could even make the argument that because they’re not handling the flows themselves, that frees their mind up for more “inward” thoughts. My two criticisms. First off, to address my deep concern and strong disapproval of using an artist that is not familiar with the series. Ethically, artistically, practically (and bunch of other big words), this is a very big NO-NO in any cultural sense. My other gripe, while being minimal, it still irks me….The flows themselves don’t look at all how I would be led to believe. More ethereal, yet stark, and more natural, perhaps. These flows look like phosphor or heat or odor trails or something. Definitely don’t look like the most intricate weave devised for usage in accordance with the weather this Age has seen….Sorry.

The artwork looks great! I’m wondering if anyone knows why this book has been pulled from Amazon’s Kindle site?
