Tor Books has released the cover art for the upcoming ebook release of A Crown of Swords, the seventh book in the Wheel of Time series. Each month, beginning this past October, Tor will release the next book in the series in a variety of electronic formats. See below for a full list of links to the released books, as well as a schedule of the upcoming releases.

With each eBook, Tor is including brand new artwork for the “cover”. A different artist has been selected for each one, giving the art team at Tor a chance to provide us fans with a variety of styles.

This month, the artwork is by Mélanie Delon. The ebook will be released on April 20th.

As with the previous covers that were released for the ebooks, Tor Art Director Irene Gallo has done a write up about the process behind creating this image. Be sure to check out the full article. Here’s an excerpt:

Mélanie Delon’s work is exemplified by utilizing detail and soft focus, creating images that blur the edges between realism and fantasy. It was a great match for a moment of surrender and rebirth, a moment when Nynaeve must disengage from her usual character traits and, if just for second, open herself up.

Wheel of Time eBook News and release schedule

Didn’t Lan get kicked in the face for his heroic attempt and never really ended up helping her out of the water?

This is very probably my favorite scene from this book… I love how the artists for these new covers seem to be on the same wavelength with me. :)

I think it looks awesome. PapaJai (@ 16) says Helen Hunt. Anyone agree that Ny looks like Jodie Foster??

Nynaeve looks real good though. Very sexy, just as I like her.
she’s one of my fav chars.

nice painting, but I didn’t know that Lan was metrosexual.
I though he had a rough face.

what lan looks like is a sissy, with teeny-tiny, delicate, pale, never-done-a-day’s-work hands. really not how i ever saw him. the cover looks “pretty” but wrong to me. WOT always seemed to be one of the very few fantasy genre books aimed at women. teeny-tiny, delicate, pale, never-done-a-day’s-work hands are not, i think, how most women think of lan, or any other hero. ya know?

I love the art; it’s truly amazing to look at, and so obviously in a far different league than the relatively simplistic (and let’s face it, often downright bad) print art.

There are, of course, a few details to nitpick at that others have mentioned. Lan certainly looks a bit younger than I’d imagined him, and he also looks…well, I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I would just say strange. Nynaeve just looks…wow. I mean she’s always been one of my favourite characters, and while I can’t say this is exactly how I envisioned her, it’s certainly a fantastic take on her.

That said, as much as I like it, I do tend to agree with the notion that this scene doesn’t necessarily best highlight the primary focus of Crown of Swords. However, I do very much appreciate the artist’s mindset in exploring other characters and relationships that haven’t been illustrated in this line of ebook art or in the original print art. With that in mind, I can forgive deviating a bit in order to display relatively untapped portions of WoT.
