Tor Books has released the cover art for the upcoming ebook release of THE SHADOW RISING, the fourth book in the Wheel of Time series. Each month, beginning this past October, Tor will release the next book in the series in a variety of electronic formats. See below for a full list of links to the released books, as well as a schedule of the upcoming releases.

With each eBook, Tor is including brand new artwork for the “cover”. A different artist has been selected for each one, giving the art team at Tor a chance to provide us fans with a variety of styles.

This month, the artwork is by Sam Weber. The ebook will be released on January 19th.

As with the previous covers that were released for the ebooks, Tor Art Director Irene Gallo has done a write up about the process behind creating this image. Be sure to check out the full article. Here’s an excerpt:

I knew that Sam is a huge Robert Jordan fan. Huge fan. I knew he would approach the assignment with unparalleled dedication and understanding.

There’s also a YouTube Video of Sam talking about this piece of art.

Geez, not how i imagined Mat at all. He looks like a 10 year old, gay EMO. And he’s really ugly. No doubt Sam Weber can paint, but this guy looks more like Olver than Matrim Cauthon.

While I agree that the face is not how I immagine mat and the scar should be more visible I like the clothing and the spear.

PS to all complaining about the absence of the hat and the scarf I remind that he start to wear a scarf only after coming back from Rhuidean to hide the scar and he buys the hat from Kadere on chapter 36 while this is clearly a scene from chapter 26 .

    Hope I have been helpfull

I’m sure you’re right about the foxhead medallion. I don’t remember either. To be honest I didnt even notice it as large until seeing the closeup of his face which in such close proximity seemed large. From the full size photo it seems fine. :)

I love this cover. Such talent! I love the feeling it evokes. My only qualm is….Mat’s face. The close up reveals him to be rather off-putting. Come on, this is Mat the lady killer, with the panty-dropping smile we’re talking about. He should have been rendered a more handsome fellow. (Oh, and to Angela_P; I think I remember reading that his foxhead medallion was about the size of the palm of his hand. Am I right?)

Oh, and the foxhead medallion under his jacket is way larger than I thought it would be.
