The Dabel Brothers have released information for subscribers about their plans for the remaining NEW SPRING comic books:

Dabel Brothers Productions Announces Plan for New Spring Subscribers

Dabel Brothers Productions (“DB Pro”) announced today that all persons having a subscription for Robert Jordan’s New Spring comic from Red Eagle Entertainment will soon be receiving the final three issues of the series from DB Pro at no charge.

New Spring tells the story of the search for the infant Dragon Reborn and of the adventures of Moiraine Damodred, a young Aes Sedai, and Lan Mandragoran, the uncrowned king of a long-dead nation. In 2005 and 2006, five of a planned total of eight issues of the New Spring comic were produced by DB Pro and published by Red Eagle Entertainment. In a press release made in February of 2009, DB Pro announced that it will be publishing the final three issues of New Spring in 2009, beginning with issue #6 in April, 2009, and with issues 7 and 8 shipping on a monthly basis thereafter. Red Eagle Entertainment has provided DB Pro with its master subscriber list, and DB Pro has attempted to contact all of these persons through the e-mail address that was used to originally sign up for the New Spring comic.

Because many of these subscribers have since relocated or changed their e-mail addresses since purchasing their subscriptions from Red Eagle Entertainment, any persons who have not been contacted by DB Pro about New Spring, or who have changed their postal address since registering with Red Eagle Entertainment, should immediately contact DB Pro at ldabel@dabelbrothers.com in order to ensure the timely delivery of their final issues of the New Spring comic.

“With the help and support of Red Eagle Entertainment and Harriet Rigney we are very happy to publish the long-awaited final issues in the New Spring comic series,” said Les Dabel, Vice President of DB Pro. “We wish DB Pro great success in the completion of the New Spring comic and in their future work adapting Robert Jordan’s much-beloved series The Wheel of Time to the visual medium of comics and graphic novels,” said Larry Mondragon, Executive Vice President of Red Eagle Entertainment.

Red Eagle Entertainment, the publishing company behind the New Spring graphic novel, has issued this press release:

Dear Fans of the New Spring Comic:

We hope that you have enjoyed our past issues of Robert Jordan’s New Spring
comic series. However, we have some important news to share with you
concerning the future availability of this publication. As you may know, Red
Eagle Entertainment is the publisher of New Spring, and is responsible for the
printing and distribution of each issue.

The actual production of the New Spring comic series has been overseen by
Dabel Brothers Production (DB Pro), who is responsible for the preparation of
each issue, along with a team of independent artists, writers and colorists that
they hire, supervise and manage.

From the beginning, New Spring has been beset by a series of production
setbacks. Despite repeated efforts by DB Pro to manage these problems, the
production delays have continued unabated and Red Eagle did not receive Issue
No. 6 when due. Moreover, all availability targets for the remaining issues in the
New Spring series have been missed. In addition, there have been major
changes in the creative team over the past months, causing increased effort to
maintain a consistent and quality look for the series.

As the publisher of New Spring, we sincerely apologize for all of these past
delays. Red Eagle has been acutely sensitive to all of the concerns voiced by
our direct subscribers, as well as by our retail customers, local comic shops and
Diamond Comics, our U.S. distributor for New Spring.

We agree that these accumulated delays have become unacceptable. However,
our contract for the publication of New Spring does not give Red Eagle the right
to complete the New Spring series on its own or in tandem with another
production partner. Moreover, our repeated efforts to reach a meaningful
solution with DB Pro have been unsuccessful, as have our discussions with a
representative of Robert Jordan.

With no reasonable alternative available, and after considerable reflection, Red
Eagle is reluctantly announcing it will cease the publication of New Spring. While
the cancellation of this comic series is a major disappointment for Red Eagle, our
real concern is for the many fans around the world that will be deprived of the
experience of reading the final installments of the New Spring story.

We truly regret that we are unable to finish the New Spring comic series.
Although future events are outside of our control, we remain open to any change
in circumstances that may one day permit Red Eagle to complete the New Spring
comic at the standards of quality and punctuality that fans of the series deserve.

We thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Red Eagle Entertainment

Red Eagle is the brand management company for The Wheel of Time, and also the company which is planning to produce a big-budget film based on The Eye of the World.

Dragonmount, along with a few other fans sites, received this press release from Red Eagle Entertainment and the Dabel Brothers, the producers of the NEW SPRING graphic novel:

LOS ANGELES Red Eagle Entertainment, LLC™ announced today that they have formed a production partnership with comic book studio Dabel Brothers Production (DB Pro) to bring internationally and critically acclaimed author Robert Jordan’s New Spring: The Novel, the prequel to his epic bestselling The Wheel of Time™ series, to the world of comic books and graphic novels.

The first of these products will be a line of monthly comic books and graphic novels based

The comic book adaptation, tentatively titled The Wheel of Time: New Spring, will be cowritten by Robert Jordan and comic book veteran Chuck Dixon (writer, Batman, Nightwing, Savage Sword of Conan, writer/creator, Way of the Rat, adapter, The Hobbit, 2002). It will feature art by Mike S. In other words, expect to see more WoT merchandise, games, and maybe a movie (??) from them. Maybe.

Bowker’s Books in Print now lists a Tor trade paperback edition of New Spring: The Novel due out in January 2005. ISBN: 0-7653-1467-3. List price $9.95. However, no other databases including Amazon and Barnes&Noble list this new edition so we’re not sure if it’s for real or not. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

Update: Michael has it right. The book itself is exactly the same and the dustjacket is the same except for the addition of judiciously placed stickers. If you were waiting for the paperback, you might go ahead and take advantage of the lower price. Barnes&Noble has it for $9.45 and Amazon.com for $9.18.

The December 2004 issue of Locus Magazine lists forthcoming books through September 2005. The Tor mass market paperback of New Spring: The Novel is listed for June 2005. The Orbit edition went on sale December 2 and is readily available. Tor typically releases Jordan mass market paperbacks a couple of months before the next hardback, so this continues to bode well for a Fall 2005 appearance for Knife of Dreams.
